We report on the temperature dependence of the $ZrTe_5$ electronic properties, studied at equilibrium and out of equilibrium, by means of time and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Our results unveil the dependence of the electronic band structure across the Fermi energy on the sample temperature. This finding is regarded as the dominant mechanism responsible for the anomalous resistivity observed at T* $sim$ 160 K along with the change of the charge carrier character from holelike to electronlike. Having addressed these long-lasting questions, we prove the possibility to control, at the ultrashort time scale, both the binding energy and the quasiparticle lifetime of the valence band. These experimental evidences pave the way for optically controlling the thermoelectric and magnetoelectric transport properties of $ZrTe_5$.

The Raman effect -- inelastic scattering of light by lattice vibrations (phonons) -- produces an optical response closely tied to a materials crystal structure. Here we show that resonant optical excitation of IR and Raman phonons gives rise to a Ram an scattering effect that can induce giant shifts to the refractive index and induce new optical constants that are forbidden in the equilibrium crystal structure. We complete the description of light-matter interactions mediated by coupled IR and Raman phonons in crystalline insulators -- currently the focus of numerous experiments aiming to dynamically control material properties -- by including a forgotten pathway through the nonlinear lattice polarizability. Our work expands the toolset for control and development of new optical technologies by revealing that the absorption of light within the terahertz gap can enable control of optical properties of materials over a broad frequency range.

All-optical pump-probe detection of magnetization precession has been performed for ferromagnetic EuO thin films at 10 K. We demonstrate that the circularly-polarized light can be used to control the magnetization precession on an ultrafast time scal e. This takes place within the 100 fs duration of a single laser pulse, through combined contribution from two nonthermal photomagnetic effects, i.e., enhancement of the magnetization and an inverse Faraday effect. From the magnetic field dependences of the frequency and the Gilbert damping parameter, the intrinsic Gilbert damping coefficient is evaluated to be {alpha} approx 3times10^-3.

We investigate the effect of the laser parameters of pulsed laser deposition on the film stoichiometry and electronic properties of LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 (001) heterostructures. The La/Al ratio in the LaAlO_3 films was varied over a wide range from 0.88 to 1.15, and was found to have a strong effect on the interface conductivity. In particular, the carrier density is modulated over more than two orders of magnitude. The film lattice expansion, caused by cation vacancies, is found to be the important functional parameter. These results can be understood to arise from the variations in the electrostatic boundary conditions, and their resolution, with stoichiometry.
The electronic and optical properties of the cleavage InAs(110) surface are studied using a semi-empirical tight-binding method which employs an extended atomic-like basis set. We describe and discuss the electronic character of the surface electroni c states and we compare with other theoretical approaches, and with experimental observations. We calculate the surface electronic band structure and the Reflectance Anisotropy Spectrum, which are described and discussed in terms of the surface electronic states and the atomic structure.

Ultrafast two-color pump-probe measurements, involving coherent acoustic phonon (CAP) waves, have provided information simultaneously on the mechanical properties and on the electronic structure of ferromagnetic GaMnAs. The elastic constant C11 of Ga 1-xMnxAs (0.03<x<0.07) are observed to be systematically smaller than those of GaAs. Both C11 and Vs of GaMnAs are found to increase with temperature (78 K<T<295 K), again in contrast to the opposite behavior in GaAs. In addition, the fundamental bandgap (at E0 critical point) of Ga1-xMnxAs is found to shift slightly to higher energies with Mn concentration.
