Ultrafast two-color pump-probe measurements, involving coherent acoustic phonon (CAP) waves, have provided information simultaneously on the mechanical properties and on the electronic structure of ferromagnetic GaMnAs. The elastic constant C11 of Ga1-xMnxAs (0.03<x<0.07) are observed to be systematically smaller than those of GaAs. Both C11 and Vs of GaMnAs are found to increase with temperature (78 K<T<295 K), again in contrast to the opposite behavior in GaAs. In addition, the fundamental bandgap (at E0 critical point) of Ga1-xMnxAs is found to shift slightly to higher energies with Mn concentration.

Using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction, we investigate optically excited coherent acoustic phonons in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. The low symmetry of the (112) surface probed in our experiment enables the simultaneous excitation of longitudin al and shear acoustic modes, whose dispersion closely matches first-principles calculations and previously measured elastic properties. We find an asymmetry in the spectral lineshape of the longitudinal mode that is notably absent from the shear mode, suggesting a time-dependent frequency chirp that is likely driven by photoinduced carrier diffusion. Our study underscores the benefit of using off-axis crystal orientations when optically exciting shear deformations in topological semimetals, allowing one to transiently change their crystal structure and potentially their topological properties.

We consider the electronic properties of ferromagnetic bulk GaMnAs at zero temperature using two realistic tight-binding models, one due to Tang and Flatte and one due to Masek. In particular, we study the density of states, the Fermi energy, the inv erse participation ratio, and the optical conductivity with varying impurity concentration x=0.01-0.15. The results are very sensitive to the assumptions made for the on-site and hopping matrix elements of the Mn impurities. For low concentrations, x<0.02, Maseks model shows only small deviations from the case of p-doped GaAs with increased number of holes while within Tang and Flattes model an impurity-band forms. For higher concentrations x, Maseks model shows minor quantitative changes in the properties we studied while the results of the Tang and Flatte model exhibit qualitative changes including strong localization of eigenstates with energies close to the band edge. These differences between the two approaches are in particular visible in the optical conductivity, where Maseks model shows a Drude peak at zero frequency while no such peak is observed in Tang and Flattes model. Interestingly, although the two models differ qualitatively the calculated effective optical masses of both models are similar within the range of 0.4-1.0 of the free electron mass.

We directly measure the hole spin lifetime in ferromagnetic GaMnAs via time- and polarization-resolved spectroscopy. Below the Curie temperature Tc, an ultrafast photoexcitation with linearly-polarized light is shown to create a non-equilibrium hole spin population via the dynamical polarization of holes through p-d exchange scattering with ferromagnetically-ordered Mn spins, and we characterize their relaxation dynamics. The observed relaxation consists of a distinct three-step recovery : (i) femtosecond (fs) hole spin relaxation ~ $160-200 fs, (ii) picosecond (ps) hole energy relaxation ~ 1-2 ps, and (iii) a coherent, damped Mn spin precession with a period of ~ 250 ps. The transient amplitude of the hole spin component diminishes with increasing temperature, directly following the ferromagnetic order, while the hole energy amplitude shows negligible temperature change, consistent with our interpretation. Our results thus establish the hole spin lifetimes in ferromagnetic semiconductors and demonstrate a novel spectroscopy method for studying non-equilibrium hole spins in the presence of correlation and magnetic order.
We have studied the magnetic properties of (GaMnAs)m/(GaAs)n superlattices with magnetic GaMnAs layers of thickness between 8 and 16 molecular layers (ML) (23-45 AA), and with nonmagnetic GaAs spacers from 4 ML to 10 ML (11-28 AA). While previous rep orts state that GaMnAs layers thinner than 50 AA are paramagnetic in the whole Mn composition range achievable using MBE growth (up to 8% Mn), we have found that short period superlattices exhibit a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition with a transition temperature which depends on both the thickness of the magnetic GaMnAs layer and the nonmagnetic GaAs spacer. The neutron scattering experiments have shown that the magnetic layers in superlattices are ferromagnetically coupled for both thin (below 50 AA) and thick (above 50 AA) GaMnAs layers.

We use femtosecond optical pulses to induce, control and monitor magnetization precession in ferromagnetic Ga0.965Mn0.035As. At temperatures below ~40 K we observe coherent oscillations of the local Mn spins, triggered by an ultrafast photoinduced re orientation of the in-plane easy axis. The amplitude saturation of the oscillations above a certain pump intensity indicates that the easy axis remains unchanged above ~TC/2. We find that the observed magnetization precession damping (Gilbert damping) is strongly dependent on pump laser intensity, but largely independent on ambient temperature. We provide a physical interpretation of the observed light-induced collective Mn-spin relaxation and precession.
