We introduce a notion of measure contracting actions and show that Koopman representations corresponding to ergodic measure contracting actions are irreducible. As a corollary we obtain that Koopman representations associated to canonical actions of Higman-Thompson groups are irreducible. We also show that the actions of weakly branch groups on the boundaries of rooted trees are measure contracting. This gives a new point of view on irreducibility of the corresponding Koopman representations.

We study Koopman and quasi-regular representations corresponding to the action of arbitrary weakly branch group G on the boundary of a rooted tree T. One of the main results is that in the case of a quasi-invariant Bernoulli measure on the boundary o f T the corresponding Koopman representation of G is irreducible (under some general conditions). We also show that quasi-regular representations of G corresponding to different orbits and Koopman representations corresponding to different Bernoulli measures on the boundary of T are pairwise disjoint. This gives two continual collections of pairwise disjoint irreducible representations of a weakly branch group. Another corollary of our results is triviality of the centralizer of G in various groups of transformations on the boundary of T.
In this paper we investigate relations between Koopman, groupoid and quasi-regular representations of countable groups. We show that for an ergodic measure class preserving action of a countable group G on a standard Borel space the associated groupo id and quasi-regular representations are weakly equivalent and weakly contained in the Koopman representation. Moreover, if the action is hyperfinite then the Koopman representation is weakly equivalent to the groupoid. As a corollary of our results we obtain a continuum of pairwise disjoint pairwise equivalent irreducible representations of weakly branch groups. As an illustration we calculate spectra of regular, Koopman and groupoid representations associated to the action of the 2-group of intermediate growth constructed by the second author in 1980.
We prove an analogue of the celebrated Hall-Higman theorem, which gives a lower bound for the degree of the minimal polynomial of any semisimple element of prime power order $p^{a}$ of a finite classical group in any nontrivial irreducible cross char acteristic representation. With a few explicit exceptions, this degree is at least $p^{a-1}(p-1)$.
The representations of a $k$-graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(Lambda)$ which arise from $Lambda$-semibranching function systems are closely linked to the dynamics of the $k$-graph $Lambda$. In this paper, we undertake a systematic analysis of the question of irreducibility for these representations. We provide a variety of necessary and sufficient conditions for irreducibility, as well as a number of examples indicating the optimality of our results. We also explore the relationship between irreducible $Lambda$-semibranching representations and purely atomic representations of $C^*(Lambda)$. Throughout the paper, we work in the setting of row-finite source-free $k$-graphs; this paper constitutes the first analysis of $Lambda$-semibranching representations at this level of generality.

Let G be a connected reductive group over an algebraic closure of a finite field Fq. In this paper it is proved that the infinite dimensional Steinberg module of kG defined by N. Xi in 2014 is irreducible when k is a field of positive characteristic and char k is not char Fq. For certain special linear groups, we show that the Steinberg modules of the groups are not quasi-finite with respect to some natural quasi-finite sequences of the groups.
