We conduct an in-depth exploration of different strategies for doing event detection in videos using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained for image classification. We study different ways of performing spatial and temporal pooling, feature normalization, choice of CNN layers as well as choice of classifiers. Making judicious choices along these dimensions led to a very significant increase in performance over more naive approaches that have been used till now. We evaluate our approach on the challenging TRECVID MED14 dataset with two popular CNN architectures pretrained on ImageNet. On this MED14 dataset, our methods, based entirely on image-trained CNN features, can outperform several state-of-the-art non-CNN models. Our proposed late fusion of CNN- and motion-based features can further increase the mean average precision (mAP) on MED14 from 34.95% to 38.74%. The fusion approach achieves the state-of-the-art classification performance on the challenging UCF-101 dataset.

This work addresses the problem of accurate semantic labelling of short videos. To this end, a multitude of different deep nets, ranging from traditional recurrent neural networks (LSTM, GRU), temporal agnostic networks (FV,VLAD,BoW), fully connected neural networks mid-stage AV fusion and others. Additionally, we also propose a residual architecture-based DNN for video classification, with state-of-the art classification performance at significantly reduced complexity. Furthermore, we propose four new approaches to diversity-driven multi-net ensembling, one based on fast correlation measure and three incorporating a DNN-based combiner. We show that significant performance gains can be achieved by ensembling diverse nets and we investigate factors contributing to high diversity. Based on the extensive YouTube8M dataset, we provide an in-depth evaluation and analysis of their behaviour. We show that the performance of the ensemble is state-of-the-art achieving the highest accuracy on the YouTube-8M Kaggle test data. The performance of the ensemble of classifiers was also evaluated on the HMDB51 and UCF101 datasets, and show that the resulting method achieves comparable accuracy with state-of-the-art methods using similar input features.
We study the problem of video classification for facial analysis and human action recognition. We propose a novel weakly supervised learning method that models the video as a sequence of automatically mined, discriminative sub-events (eg. onset and o ffset phase for smile, running and jumping for highjump). The proposed model is inspired by the recent works on Multiple Instance Learning and latent SVM/HCRF -- it extends such frameworks to model the ordinal aspect in the videos, approximately. We obtain consistent improvements over relevant competitive baselines on four challenging and publicly available video based facial analysis datasets for prediction of expression, clinical pain and intent in dyadic conversations and on three challenging human action datasets. We also validate the method with qualitative results and show that they largely support the intuitions behind the method.
Hazy images are common in real scenarios and many dehazing methods have been developed to automatically remove the haze from images. Typically, the goal of image dehazing is to produce clearer images from which human vision can better identify the ob ject and structural details present in the images. When the ground-truth haze-free image is available for a hazy image, quantitative evaluation of image dehazing is usually based on objective metrics, such as Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structural Similarity (SSIM). However, in many applications, large-scale images are collected not for visual examination by human. Instead, they are used for many high-level vision tasks, such as automatic classification, recognition and categorization. One fundamental problem here is whether various dehazing methods can produce clearer images that can help improve the performance of the high-level tasks. In this paper, we empirically study this problem in the important task of image classification by using both synthetic and real hazy image datasets. From the experimental results, we find that the existing image-dehazing methods cannot improve much the image-classification performance and sometimes even reduce the image-classification performance.
Classifying time series data using neural networks is a challenging problem when the length of the data varies. Video object trajectories, which are key to many of the visual surveillance applications, are often found to be of varying length. If such trajectories are used to understand the behavior (normal or anomalous) of moving objects, they need to be represented correctly. In this paper, we propose video object trajectory classification and anomaly detection using a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Variational Autoencoder (VAE) architecture. First, we introduce a high level representation of object trajectories using color gradient form. In the next stage, a semi-supervised way to annotate moving object trajectories extracted using Temporal Unknown Incremental Clustering (TUIC), has been applied for trajectory class labeling. Anomalous trajectories are separated using t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE). Finally, a hybrid CNN-VAE architecture has been used for trajectory classification and anomaly detection. The results obtained using publicly available surveillance video datasets reveal that the proposed method can successfully identify some of the important traffic anomalies such as vehicles not following lane driving, sudden speed variations, abrupt termination of vehicle movement, and vehicles moving in wrong directions. The proposed method is able to detect above anomalies at higher accuracy as compared to existing anomaly detection methods.
Recent years have seen considerable research activities devoted to video enhancement that simultaneously increases temporal frame rate and spatial resolution. However, the existing methods either fail to explore the intrinsic relationship between tem poral and spatial information or lack flexibility in the choice of final temporal/spatial resolution. In this work, we propose an unconstrained space-time video super-resolution network, which can effectively exploit space-time correlation to boost performance. Moreover, it has complete freedom in adjusting the temporal frame rate and spatial resolution through the use of the optical flow technique and a generalized pixelshuffle operation. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method not only outperforms the state-of-the-art, but also requires far fewer parameters and less running time.
