Molecular dynamics simulations on tensile deformation of initially defect free single crystal copper nanowire oriented in <001>{100} has been carried out at 10 K under adiabatic and isothermal loading conditions. The tensile behaviour was characterized by sharp rise in stress in elastic regime followed by sudden drop at the point of dislocation nucleation. The important finding is that the variation in dislocation density is correlated with the observed stress-strain response. Several interesting micro- structural features were observed during tensile deformation such as slip, phase transformation and pentagonal structure in necking region affecting the plastic deformation behaviour of single crystal copper nanowire.

We report results of large-scale molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations of dynamic deformation under biaxial tensile strain of pre-strained single-crystalline nanometer-scale-thick face-centered cubic (fcc) copper films. Our results show that stacking f aults, which are abundantly present in fcc metals, may play a significant role in the dissociation, cross-slip, and eventual annihilation of dislocations in small-volume structures of fcc metals. The underlying mechanisms are mediated by interactions within and between extended dislocations that lead to annihilation of Shockley partial dislocations or formation of perfect dislocations. Our findings demonstrate dislocation starvation in small-volume structures with ultra-thin film geometry, governed by a mechanism other than dislocation escape to free surfaces, and underline the significant role of geometry in determining the mechanical response of metallic small-volume structures.
The nucleation of cavities in a homogenous polymer under tensile strain is investigated in a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation. In order to establish a causal relation between local microstructure and the onset of cavitation, a detailed an alysis of some local properties is presented. In contrast to common assumptions, the nucleation of a cavity is neither correlated to a local loss of density nor, to the stress at the atomic scale and nor to the chain ends density in the undeformed state. Instead, a cavity in glassy polymers nucleates in regions that display a low bulk elastic modulus. This criterion allows one to predict the cavity position before the cavitation occurs. Even if the localization of a cavity is not directly predictable from the initial configuration, the elastically weak zones identified in the initial state emerge as favorite spots for cavity formation.
We present molecular-dynamic simulations of memory resistors (memristors) including the crystal field effects on mobile ionic species such as oxygen vacancies appearing during operation of the device. Vacancy distributions show different patterns dep ending on the ratio of a spatial period of the crystal field to a characteristic radius of the vacancy-vacancy interaction. There are signatures of the orientational order and of spatial voids in the vacancy distributions for some crystal field potentials. The crystal field stabilizes the patterns after they are formed, resulting in a non-volatile switching of the simulated devices.

Recently, Dammak and coworkers (H. Dammak, Y. Chalopin, M. Laroche, M. Hayoun, and J.J. Greffet. Quantumthermal bath for molecular dynamics simulation. Phys. Rev. Lett., 103:190601, 2009.) proposed that the quantum statistics of vibrations in condens ed systems at low temperature could be simulated by running molecular dynamics simulations in the presence of a colored noise with an appropriate power spectral density. In the present contribution, we show how this method can be implemented in a flexible manner and at a low computational cost by synthesizing the corresponding noise on the fly. The proposed algorithm is tested for a simple harmonic chain as well as for a more realistic model of aluminium crystal. The energy and Debye-Waller factor are shown to be in good agreement with those obtained from harmonic approximations based on the phonon spectrum of the systems. The limitations of the method associated with anharmonic effects are also briefly discussed. Some perspectives for disordered materials and heat transfer are considered.

Iron, cobalt and nickel nanoparticles, grown in the gas phase, are known to arrange in chains and bracelet-like rings due to the long-range dipolar interaction between the ferromagnetic (or super-paramagnetic) particles. We investigate the dynamics a nd thermodynamics of such magnetic dipolar nanoparticles for low densities using molecular dynamics simulations and analyze the influence of temperature and external magnetic fields on two- and three-dimensional systems. The obtained phase diagrams can be understood by using simple energetic arguments.
