We demonstrate radiofrequency thermometry on a micrometer-sized metallic island below 100 mK. Our device is based on a normal metal-insulator-superconductor tunnel junction coupled to a resonator with transmission readout. In the first generation of the device, we achieve 90 {mu}K/Hz^1/2 noise-equivalent temperature with 10 MHz bandwidth. We measure the thermal relaxation time of the electron gas in the island, which we find to be of the order of 100 {mu}s. Such a calorimetric detector, upon optimization, can be seamlessly integrated into superconducting circuits, with immediate applications in quantum-thermodynamics experiments down to single quanta of energy.

We present a set of experiments to optimize the performance of the noninvasive thermometer based on proximity superconductivity. Current through a standard tunnel junction between an aluminum superconductor and a copper electrode is controlled by the strength of the proximity induced to this normal metal, which in turn is determined by the position of a direct superconducting contact from the tunnel junction. Several devices with different distances were tested. We develop a theoretical model based on Usadel equations and dynamic Coulomb blockade which reproduces the measured results and yields a tool to calibrate the thermometer and to optimize it further in future experiments.
We couple a proximity Josephson junction to a Joule-heated normal metal film and measure its electron temperature under steady state and nonequilibrium conditions. With a timed sequence of heating and temperature probing pulses, we are able to monito r its electron temperature in nonequilibrium with effectively zero back-action from the temperature measurement in the form of additional dissipation or thermal conductance. The experiments demonstrate the possibility of using a fast proximity Josephson junction thermometer for studying thermal transport in mesoscopic systems and for calorimetry.
Although the detection of light at terahertz (THz) frequencies is important for a large range of applications, current detectors typically have several disadvantages in terms of sensitivity, speed, operating temperature, and spectral range. Here, we use graphene as a photoactive material to overcome all of these limitations in one device. We introduce a novel detector for terahertz radiation that exploits the photothermoelectric (PTE) effect, based on a design that employs a dual-gated, dipolar antenna with a gap of 100 nm. This narrow-gap antenna simultaneously creates a pn junction in a graphene channel located above the antenna and strongly concentrates the incoming radiation at this pn junction, where the photoresponse is created. We demonstrate that this novel detector has an excellent sensitivity, with a noise-equivalent power of 80 pW-per-square-root-Hz at room temperature, a response time below 30 ns (setup-limited), a high dynamic range (linear power dependence over more than 3 orders of magnitude) and broadband operation (measured range 1.8-4.2 THz, antenna-limited), which fulfills a combination that is currently missing in the state-of-the-art detectors. Importantly, on the basis of the agreement we obtained between experiment, analytical model, and numerical simulations, we have reached a solid understanding of how the PTE effect gives rise to a THz-induced photoresponse, which is very valuable for further detector optimization.
We propose experimentally feasible means for non-destructive thermometry of homogeneous Bose Einstein condensates in different spatial dimensions ($din{1,2,3}$). Our impurity based protocol suggests that the fundamental error bound on thermometry at the sub nano Kelvin domain depends highly on the dimension, in that the higher the dimension the better the precision. Furthermore, sub-optimal thermometry of the condensates by using measurements that are experimentally feasible is explored. We specifically focus on measuring position and momentum of the impurity that belong to the family of Gaussian measurements. We show that, generally, experimentally feasible measurements are far from optimal, except in 1D, where position measurements are indeed optimal. This makes realistic experiments perform very well at few nano Kelvin temperatures for all dimensions, and at sub nano Kelvin temperatures in the one dimensional scenario. These results take a significant step towards experimental realisation of probe-based quantum thermometry of Bose Einstein condensates, as it deals with them in one, two and three dimensions and uses feasible measurements applicable in current experimental setups.
Coherence evolution and echo effect of an electron spin, which is coupled inhomogeneously to an interacting one-dimensional finite spin bath via hyperfine-type interaction, is studied using the adaptive time dependent density matrix renormalization g roup (t-DMRG) method. It is found that the interplay of the coupling inhomogeneity and the transverse intra-bath interactions results in two qualitatively different coherence evolutions, namely, a coherence preserving evolution characterized by periodic oscillation and a complete decoherence evolution. Correspondingly, the echo effects induced by an electron spin flip at time $tau$ exhibit stable recoherence pulse sequence for the periodic evolution and a single peak at $sqrt 2 tau$ for the decoherence evolution, respectively. With the diagonal intra-bath interaction included, the specific feature of the periodic regime is kept, while the $sqrt 2tau$-type echo effect in the decoherence regime is significantly affected. To render the experimental verifications possible, the Hahn echo envelope as a function of $tau$ is calculated, which eliminates the inhomogeneous broadening effect and serves for the identification of the different status of the dynamic coherence evolution, periodic versus decoherence.
