When a closed quantum system is driven periodically with period $T$, it approaches a periodic state synchronized with the drive in which any local observable measured stroboscopically approaches a steady value. For integrable systems, the resulting behaviour is captured by a periodic version of a generalized Gibbs ensemble. By contrast, here we show that for generic non-integrable interacting systems, local observables become independent of the initial state entirely. Essentially, this happens because Floquet eigenstates of the driven system at quasienergy $omega_alpha$ consist of a mixture of the exponentially many eigenstates of the undriven Hamiltonian which are thus drawn from the entire extensive undriven spectrum. This is a form of equilibration which depends only on the Hilbert space of the undriven system and not on any details of its Hamiltonian.

While studying systems driven out of equilibrium, one usually employs a drive that is not directly coupled to the degrees of freedom of the system. In contrast to such a case, we here unveil a hitherto unexplored situation of state-dependent driving, whereby a direct coupling exists between the two. We demonstrate the ubiquity of such a driving, and establish that it leads to a nontrivial steady-state that is qualitatively opposite to what is observed in other driven systems. Further, we show how state-dependent driving in a many-body system can be effectively captured in terms of a single-particle model. The origin of this description may ultimately be traced to the fact that state-dependent driving results in a force that undergoes repeated resetting in time.
In this work we investigate the late-time stationary states of open quantum systems coupled to a thermal reservoir in the strong coupling regime. In general such systems do not necessarily relax to a Boltzmann distribution if the coupling to the ther mal reservoir is non-vanishing or equivalently if the relaxation timescales are finite. Using a variety of non-equilibrium formalisms valid for non-Markovian processes, we show that starting from a product state of the closed system = system + environment, with the environment in its thermal state, the open system which results from coarse graining the environment will evolve towards an equilibrium state at late-times. This state can be expressed as the reduced state of the closed system thermal state at the temperature of the environment. For a linear (harmonic) system and environment, which is exactly solvable, we are able to show in a rigorous way that all multi-time correlations of the open system evolve towards those of the closed system thermal state. Multi-time correlations are especially relevant in the non-Markovian regime, since they cannot be generated by the dynamics of the single-time correlations. For more general systems, which cannot be exactly solved, we are able to provide a general proof that all single-time correlations of the open system evolve to those of the closed system thermal state, to first order in the relaxation rates. For the special case of a zero-temperature reservoir, we are able to explicitly construct the reduced closed system thermal state in terms of the environmental correlations.
We study the energy absorption in real time of a disordered quantum spin chain subjected to coherent monochromatic periodic driving. We determine characteristic fingerprints of the well-known ergodic (Floquet-ETH for slow driving/weak disorder) and m any-body localized (Floquet-MBL for fast driving/strong disorder) phases. In addition, we identify an intermediate regime, where the energy density of the system -- unlike the entanglement entropy a local and bounded observable -- grows logarithmically slowly over a very large time window.
We study many-body localised quantum systems subject to periodic driving. We find that the presence of a mobility edge anywhere in the spectrum is enough to lead to delocalisation for any driving strength and frequency. By contrast, for a fully local ised many-body system, a delocalisation transition occurs at a finite driving frequency. We present numerical studies on a system of interacting one-dimensional bosons and the quantum random energy model, as well as simple physical pictures accounting for those results.
We extend the notion of the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) to Open Quantum Systems governed by the Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (GKLS) Master Equation. We present evidence that the eigenstates of non-equilibrium steady state (NES S) density matrices obey a generalization of ETH in boundary-driven systems when the bulk Hamiltonian is non-integrable, just as eigenstates of Gibbs density matrices are conjectured to do in equilibrium. This generalized ETH, which we call NESS-ETH, can be used to obtain representative pure states that reproduce the expectation values of few-body operators in the NESS. The density matrices of these representative pure states can be further interpreted as weak solutions of the GKLS Master Equation. Additionally, we explore the validity and breakdown of NESS-ETH in the presence of symmetries, integrability and many-body localization in the bulk Hamiltonian.
