We study the energy absorption in real time of a disordered quantum spin chain subjected to coherent monochromatic periodic driving. We determine characteristic fingerprints of the well-known ergodic (Floquet-ETH for slow driving/weak disorder) and many-body localized (Floquet-MBL for fast driving/strong disorder) phases. In addition, we identify an intermediate regime, where the energy density of the system -- unlike the entanglement entropy a local and bounded observable -- grows logarithmically slowly over a very large time window.

We consider a weakly interacting quantum spin chain with random local interactions. We prove that many-body localization follows from a physically reasonable assumption that limits the extent of level attraction in the statistics of eigenvalues. In a KAM-style construction, a sequence of local unitary transformations is used to diagonalize the Hamiltonian by deforming the initial tensor product basis into a complete set of exact many-body eigenfunctions.
We study spin transport in a Hubbard chain with strong, random, on--site potential and with spin--dependent hopping integrals, $t_{sigma}$. For the the SU(2) symmetric case, $t_{uparrow} =t_{downarrow}$, such model exhibits only partial many-body loc alization with localized charge and (delocalized) subdiffusive spin excitations. Here, we demonstrate that breaking the SU(2) symmetry by even weak spin--asymmetry, $t_{uparrow} e t_{downarrow}$, localizes spins and restores full many-body localization. To this end we derive an effective spin model, where the spin subdiffusion is shown to be destroyed by arbitrarily weak $t_{uparrow} e t_{downarrow}$. Instability of the spin subdiffusion originates from an interplay between random effective fields and singularly distributed random exchange interactions.
We present the first detailed numerical study in three dimensions of a first-order phase transition that remains first-order in the presence of quenched disorder (specifically, the ferromagnetic/paramagnetic transition of the site-diluted four states Potts model). A tricritical point, which lies surprisingly near to the pure-system limit and is studied by means of Finite-Size Scaling, separates the first-order and second-order parts of the critical line. This investigation has been made possible by a new definition of the disorder average that avoids the diverging-variance probability distributions that plague the standard approach. Entropy, rather than free energy, is the basic object in this approach that exploits a recently introduced microcanonical Monte Carlo method.

We study the thermodynamic properties of spin systems with bond-disorder on small-world hypergraphs, obtained by superimposing a one-dimensional Ising chain onto a random Bethe graph with p-spin interactions. Using transfer-matrix techniques, we deri ve fixed-point equations describing the relevant order parameters and the free energy, both in the replica symmetric and one step replica symmetry breaking approximation. We determine the static and dynamic ferromagnetic transition and the spinglass transition within replica symmetry for all temperatures, and demonstrate corrections to these results when one step replica symmetry breaking is taken into account. The results obtained are in agreement with Monte-Carlo simulations.
When translational symmetry is broken by bulk disorder, the topological nature of states in topological crystalline systems may change depending on the type of disorder that is applied. In this work, we characterize the phases of a one-dimensional (1 D) chain with inversion and chiral symmetries, where every disorder configuration is inversion-symmetric. By using a basis-independent formulation for the inversion topological invariant, chiral winding number, and bulk polarization, we are able to construct phase diagrams for these quantities when disorder is present. We show that unlike the chiral winding number and bulk polarization, the inversion topological invariant can fluctuate when the bulk spectral gap closes at strong disorder. Using the position-space renormalization group, we are able to compare how the inversion topological invariant, chiral winding number and bulk polarization behave at low energies in the strong disorder limit. We show that with inversion symmetry-preserving disorder, the value of the inversion topological invariant is determined by the inversion eigenvalues of the states at the inversion centers, while quantities such as the chiral winding number and the bulk polarization still have contributions from every state throughout the chain. We also show that it is possible to alter the value of the inversion topological invariant in a clean system by occupying additional states at the inversion centers while keeping the bulk polarization fixed. We discuss the implications of our results for topological crystalline phases in higher-dimensional electronic systems, and in ultra-cold atomic systems.
