We present a practical approach to the numerical optimisation of the guiding properties of buried microstructured waveguides, which can be fabricated in a z-cut lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystal by the method of direct femtosecond laser inscription. We demonstrate the possibility to extend the spectral range of low-loss operation of the waveguide into the mid-infrared region beyond 3{mu}m.

We report two novel fabrication techniques, as well as spectral transmission and propagation loss measurements of the subwavelength plastic wires with highly porous (up to 86%) and non-porous transverse geometries. The two fabrication techniques we d escribe are based on the microstructured molding approach. In one technique the mold is made completely from silica by stacking and fusing silica capillaries to the bottom of a silica ampoule. The melted material is then poured into the silica mold to cast the microstructured preform. Another approach uses microstructured mold made of plastic which is co-drawn with a cast preform. Material of the mold is then dissolved after fiber drawing. We also describe a novel THz-TDS setup with an easily adjustable optical path length, designed to perform cutback measurements using THz fibers of up to 50 cm in length. We find that while both porous and non-porous subwavelength fibers of the same outside diameter have low propagation losses (alpha leg 0.02cm-1), however, the porous fibers exhibit a much wider spectral transmission window and enable transmission at higher frequencies compared to the non-porous fibers. We then show that the typical bell-shaped transmission spectra of the subwavelengths fibers can be very well explained by the onset of material absorption loss at higher frequencies due to strong confinement of the modal fields in the material region of the fiber, as well as strong coupling loss at lower frequencies due to mismatch of the modal field diameter and a size of the gaussian-like beam of a THz source.
The control of light by light is one of the main aims in modern photonics. In this context, a fundamental cornerstone is the realization of light-written waveguides in real time, resulting in all-optical reconfigurability of communication networks. L ight-written waveguides are often associated with spatial solitons, that is, non-diffracting waves due to a nonlinear self-focusing effect in the harmonic regime. From an applicative point of view, it is important to establish the temporal dynamics for the formation of such light-written guides. Here we investigate theoretically the temporal dynamics in nematic liquid crystals, a material where spatial solitons can be induced using continuous wave (CW) lasers with few milliWatts power. We fully address the role of the spatial walk-off and the longitudinal nonlocality in the waveguide formation. We show that, for powers large enough to induce light self-steering, the beam undergoes several fluctuations before reaching the stationary regime, in turn leading to a much longer formation time for the light-written waveguide.
We observe the dynamics of pulse trapping in a microstructured fiber. Few-cycle pulses create a system of two pulses: a Raman shifting soliton traps a pulse in the normal dispersion regime. When the soliton approaches a wavelength of zero group veloc ity dispersion the Raman shifting abruptly terminates and the trapped pulse is released. In particular, the trap is less than 4ps long and contains a 1ps pulse. After being released, this pulse asymmetrically expands to more than 10ps. Additionally, there is no disturbance of the trapping dynamics at high input pulse energies as the supercontinuum develops further.
Optical fibre-based sensors measuring refractive index shift in bodily fluids and tissues are versatile and accurate probes of physiological processes. Here, we suggest a refractive index sensor based on a microstructured exposed-core fibre (ECF). By considering a high refractive index coating of the exposed core, our modelling demonstrates the splitting of the guided mode into a surface sensing mode and a mode that is isolated from the surface. With the isolated mode acting as a reference arm, this two-mode one-fibre solution provides for robust interferometric sensing with a sensitivity of up to 60,000 rad/RIU-cm, which is suitable for sensing subtle physiological processes within hard-to-reach places inside living organisms, such as the spinal cord, ovarian tract and blood vessels.
We consider two-dimensional Schroedinger operators with an attractive potential in the form of a channel of a fixed profile built along an unbounded curve composed of a circular arc and two straight semi-lines. Using a test-function argument with hel p of parallel coordinates outside the cut-locus of the curve, we establish the existence of discrete eigenvalues. This is a special variant of a recent result of Exner in a non-smooth case and via a different technique which does not require non-positive constraining potentials.
