We employ inelastic light scattering with magnetic fields to study intersubband spin plasmons in a quantum well. We demonstrate the existence of a giant collective spin-orbit (SO) field that splits the spin-plasmon spectrum into a triplet. The effect is remarkable as each individual electron would be expected to precess in its own momentum-dependent SO field, leading to Dyakonov-Perel dephasing. Instead, many-body effects lead to a striking organization of the SO fields at the collective level. The macroscopic spin moment is quantized by a uniform collective SO field, five times higher than the individual SO field. We provide a momentum-space cartography of this field.

Spin-orbit (SO) fields in a spin-polarized electron gas are studied by angle-resolved inelastic light scattering on a CdMnTe quantum well. We demonstrate a striking organization and enhancement of SO fields acting on the collective spin excitation (s pin-flip wave). While individual electronic SO fields have a broadly distributed momentum dependence, giving rise to Dyakonov-Perel dephasing, the collective spin dynamics is governed by a single collective SO field which is drastically enhanced due to many-body effects. The enhancement factor is experimentally determined. These results provide a powerful indication that these constructive phenomena are universal to collective spin excitations of conducting systems.
We experimentally study the transport features of electrons in a spin-diode structure consisting of a single semiconductor quantum dot (QD) weakly coupled to one nonmagnetic (NM) and one ferromagnetic (FM) lead, in which the QD has an artificial atom ic nature. A Coulomb stability diamond shows asymmetric features with respect to the polarity of the bias voltage. For the regime of two-electron tunneling, we find anomalous suppression of the current for both forward and reverse bias. We discuss possible mechanisms of the anomalous current suppression in terms of spin blockade via the QD/FM interface at the ground state of a two-electron QD.
Using $vec{k}$$cdot$$vec{p}$ theory, we derive an effective four band model describing the physics of the typical two-dimensional topological insulator (HgTe/CdTe quantum well) in the presence of out-of-plane in z-direction inversion breaking and in- plane confining potentials. We find that up to third order in perturbation theory, only the inversion breaking potential generates new elements to the four band Hamiltonian that are off-diagonal in spin space. When this new effective Hamiltonian is folded into an effective two band model for the conduction (electron) or valence (heavy hole) bands, two competing terms appear: (1) a Rashba spin-orbit interaction originating from inversion breaking potential in z-direction and (2) an in-plane Pauli term as a consequence of the in-plane confining potential. Spin transport in the conduction band is further analysed within the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. We find that for asymmetrically doped HgTe quantum wells, the behaviour of the spin-Hall conductance is dominated by the Rashba term.
Spin-orbit interaction is investigated in a dual gated InAs/GaSb quantum well. Using an electric field the quantum well can be tuned between a single carrier regime with exclusively electrons as carriers and a two-carriers regime where electrons and holes coexist. Spin-orbit interaction in both regimes manifests itself as a beating in the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. In the single carrier regime the linear Dresselhaus strength is characterized by $beta =$ 28.5 meV$AA$ and the Rashba coefficient $alpha$ is tuned from 75 to 53 meV$AA$ by changing the electric field. In the two-carriers regime the spin splitting shows a nonmonotonic behavior with gate voltage, which is consistent with our band structure calculations.

We demonstrate a high-quality spin orbit torque nano-oscillator comprised of spin wave modes confined by the magnetic field by the strongly inhomogeneous dipole field of a nearby micromagnet. This approach enables variable spatial confinement and sys tematic tuning of magnon spectrum and spectral separations for studying the impact of multi-mode interactions on auto-oscillations. We find these dipole field-localized spin wave modes exhibit good characteristic properties as auto-oscillators--narrow linewidth and large amplitude--while persisting up to room temperature. We find that the linewidth of the lowest-lying localized mode is approximately proportional to temperature in good agreement with theoretical analysis of the impact of thermal fluctuations. This demonstration of a clean oscillator with tunable properties provides a powerful tool for understanding the fundamental limitations and linewidth contributions to improve future spin-Hall oscillators.
