In this work, we have investigated conduction through an artificial molecule comprising two coupled quantum dots. The question addressed is the role of inter-dot coupling on electronic transport. We find that the current through the molecule exhibits step-like features as a function of the voltage between the leads, where the step size increases as the inter-dot coupling is increased. These step-like features disappear with increasing tunneling rate from the leads, but we find that in the presence of coupling, this smooth behavior is not observed rather two kinks are seen in the current voltage curve. This shows that the resolution of the two levels persists if there is finite inter-dot coupling. Furthermore, we also consider the effects of electron-phonon interaction as well as dissipation on conduction in this system. Phononic side bands in the differential conductance survive for finite inter-dot coupling even for strong lead to molecule coupling.

Electron transport properties in a parallel double-quantum-dot structure with three-terminals are theoretically studied. By introducing a local Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we find that an incident electron from one terminal can select a specific term inal to depart from the quantum dots according to its spin state. As a result, spin polarization and spin separation can be simultaneously realized in this structure. And spin polarizations in different terminals can be inverted by tuning the structure parameters. The underlying quantum interference that gives rise to such a result is analyzed in the language of Feynman paths for the electron transmission.

We study shot noise in tunneling current through a double quantum dot connected to two electric leads. We derive two master equations in the occupation-state basis and the eigenstate basis to describe the electron dynamics. The approach based on the occupation-state basis, despite widely used in many previous studies, is valid only when the interdot coupling strength is much smaller than the energy difference between the two dots. In contrast, the calculations using the eigenstate basis are valid for an arbitrary interdot coupling. We show that the master equation in the occupation-state basis includes only the low-order terms with respect to the interdot coupling compared with the more accurate master equation in the eigenstate basis. Using realistic model parameters, we demonstrate that the predicted currents and shot-noise properties from the two approaches are significantly different when the interdot coupling is not small. Furthermore, properties of the shot noise predicted using the eigenstate basis successfully reproduce qualitative features found in a recent experiment.

We present measurements of resonant tunneling through discrete energy levels of a silicon double quantum dot formed in a thin silicon-on-insulator layer. In the absence of piezoelectric phonon coupling, spontaneous phonon emission with deformation-po tential coupling accounts for inelastic tunneling through the ground states of the two dots. Such transport measurements enable us to observe a Pauli spin blockade due to effective two-electron spin-triplet correlations, evident in a distinct bias-polarity dependence of resonant tunneling through the ground states. The blockade is lifted by the excited-state resonance by virtue of efficient phonon emission between the ground states. Our experiment demonstrates considerable potential for investigating silicon-based spin dynamics and spin-based quantum information processing.
The slowdown of optical pulses due to quantum-coherence effects is investigated theoretically for an active material consisting of InGaAs-based double quantum-dot molecules. These are designed to exhibit a long lived coherence between two electronic levels, which is an essential part of a quantum coherence scheme that makes use of electromagnetically-induced transparency effects to achieve group velocity slowdown. We apply a many-particle approach based on realistic semiconductor parameters that allows us to calculate the quantum-dot material dynamics including microscopic carrier scattering and polarisation dephasing dynamics. The group-velocity reduction is characterized in the frequency domain by a quasi-equilibrium slow-down factor and in the time domain by the probe-pulse slowdown obtained from a calculation of the spatio-temporal material dynamics coupled to the propagating optical field. The group-velocity slowdown in the quantum-dot molecule is shown to be substantially higher than what is achievable from similar transitions in typical InGaAs-based single quantum dots. The dependences of slowdown and shape of the propagating probe pulses on lattice temperature and drive intensities are investigated.
We present transport measurements on a strongly coupled graphene quantum dot in a perpendicular magnetic field. The device consists of an etched single-layer graphene flake with two narrow constrictions separating a 140 nm diameter island from source and drain graphene contacts. Lateral graphene gates are used to electrostatically tune the device. Measurements of Coulomb resonances, including constriction resonances and Coulomb diamonds prove the functionality of the graphene quantum dot with a charging energy of around 4.5 meV. We show the evolution of Coulomb resonances as a function of perpendicular magnetic field, which provides indications of the formation of the graphene specific 0th Landau level. Finally, we demonstrate that the complex pattern superimposing the quantum dot energy spectra is due to the formation of additional localized states with increasing magnetic field.
