We present an electron energy loss study using energy filtered TEM of spatially resolved surface plasmon excitations on a silver nanorod of aspect ratio 14.2 resting on a 30 nm thick silicon nitride membrane. Our results show that the excitation is quantized as resonant modes whose intensity maxima vary along the nanorods length and whose wavelength becomes compressed towards the ends of the nanorod. Theoretical calculations modelling the surface plasmon response of the silver nanorod-silicon nitride system show the importance of including retardation and substrate effects in order to describe accurately the energy dispersion of the resonant modes.
Plasmon mode in a silver nanowire is theoretically studied when the nanowire is placed on or near a silica substrate. It is found that the substrate has much influence on the plasmon mode. For the nanowire on the substrate, the plasmon (hybrid) mode
possesses not only a long propagation length but also an ultrasmall mode area. From the experimental point of view, this cavity-free structure holds a great potential to study a strong coherent interaction between the plasmon mode and single quantum system (for example, quantum dots) embedded in the substrate.
The effects of spin-orbit (SOC) and electron-phonon coupling on the collective excitation of doped monolayer Sb$_2$ are investigated using density functional and many-body perturbation theories. The spin-orbit coupling is exclusively important for th
e monolayer Sb$_2$ and it leads to the reconstruction of the electronic band structure. In particular, plasmon modes of monolayer Sb$_2$ are quite sensitive to the SOC and are characterized by very low damping rates owing to small electron-phonon scatterings. Our results show plasmons in antimonene are significantly less damped compared to monolayer graphene when plasmon energies are $hbar omega> 0.2$ eV due to smaller plasmon-phonon coupling in the former material.
We propose a scheme to obtain a low-loss propagation of Airy surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) along the interface between a dielectric and a negative-index metamaterial (NIMM). We show that, by using the transverse-magnetic mode and the related dest
ructive interference effect between electric and magnetic absorption responses, the propagation loss of the Airy SPPs can be largely suppressed when the optical frequency is close to the lossless point of the NIMM. As a result, the Airy SPPs obtained in our scheme can propagate more than 6-time long distance than that in conventional dielectric-metal interfaces.
We theoretically investigated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) of ultraviolet surface plasmon modes in aluminum nanodisks. Using full-wave simulations, we studied the impact of diameter on the resonant modes of the nanodisks. We found that th
e mode behavior can be separately classified for two distinct cases: (1) flat nanodisks where the diameter is much less than the thickness; and (2) thick nanodisks where the diameter is comparable to the thickness. While the multipolar edge modes and breathing modes of flat nanostructures have previously been interpreted using intuitive, analytical models based on surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes of a thin-film stack, it has been found that the true dispersion relation of the multipolar edge modes deviates significantly from the SPP dispersion relation. Here, we developed a modified intuitive model that uses effective wavelength theory to accurately model this dispersion relation with significantly less computational overhead compared to full-wave electromagnetic simulations. However, for the case of thick nanodisks, this effective wavelength theory breaks down, and such intuitive models are no longer viable. We found that this is because some modes of the thick nanodisks carry a polar (i.e. out of the substrate plane, or along the electron beam direction) dependence and cannot be simply categorized as radial breathing modes or angular (azimuthal) multipolar edge modes. This polar dependence leads to radiative losses, motivating the use of simultaneous EELS and cathodoluminescence measurements when experimentally investigating the complex mode behavior of thick nanostructures.
We consider a generation of two-particle quantum states in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion of light by a dielectric nanoparticle with $chi^{(2)}$ response. As a particular example, we study the generation of surface plasmon-pola
riton pairs with a ${rm GaAs}$ nanoparticle located at the silver-air interface. We show that for certain excitation geometries, ${rm N00N}$-states of surface plasmon-polariton pairs could be obtained. The effect can be physically interpreted as a result of quantum interference between pairs of induced sources, each emitting either signal or idler plasmon. We then relate the resulting ${rm N00N}$-pattern to the general symmetry properties of dyadic Greens function of a dipole emitter exciting surface waves. It renders the considered effect as a general way towards a robust generation of ${rm N00N}$-states of surface waves using spontaneous parametric down-conversion in $chi^{(2)}$ nanoparticles.
