Bi2Se3 is a topological insulator with metallic surface states residing in a large bulk bandgap. It is believed that Bi2Se3 gets additional n-type doping after exposure to atmosphere, thereby reducing the relative contribution of surface states in total conductivity. In this letter, transport measurements on Bi2Se3 nanoribbons provide additional evidence of such environmental doping process. Systematic surface composition analyses by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal fast formation and continuous growth of native oxide on Bi2Se3 under ambient conditions. In addition to n-type doping at the surface, such surface oxidation is likely the material origin of the degradation of topological surface states. Appropriate surface passivation or encapsulation may be required to probe topological surface states of Bi2Se3 by transport measurements.

We study Bi2Se3 by polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density-functional theory slab calculations. We find that the surface state Dirac fermions are characterized by a layer-dependent entangled spin-orbital t exture, which becomes apparent through quantum interference effects. This explains the discrepancy between the spin polarization from spin-resovled ARPES - ranging from 20 to 85% - and the 100% value assumed in phenomenological models. It also suggests a way to probe the intrinsic spin texture of topological insulators, and to continuously manipulate the spin polarization of photoelectrons and photocurrents all the way from 0 to +/-100% by an appropriate choice of photon energy, linear polarization, and angle of incidence.

We report on the exchange biasing of self-assembled ferromagnetic GeMn nanocolumns by GeMn-oxide caps. The x-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis of this surface oxide shows a multiplet fine structure that is typical of the Mn2+ valence state in MnO. A magnetization hysteresis shift |HE|~100 Oe and a coercivity enhancement of about 70 Oe have been obtained upon cooling (300-5 K) in a magnetic field as low as 0.25 T. This exchange bias is attributed to the interface coupling between the ferromagnetic nanocolumns and the antiferromagnetic MnO-like caps. The effect enhancement is achieved by depositing a MnO layer on the GeMn nanocolumns.
The fermionic self-energy on the surface of a topological insulator proximity coupled to ferro- and antiferromagnetic insulators is studied. An enhanced electron-magnon coupling is achieved by allowing the electrons on the surface of the topological insulator to have a different exchange coupling to the two sublattices of the antiferromagnet. Such a system is therefore seen as superior to a ferromagnetic interface for the realization of magnon-mediated superconductivity. The increased electron-magnon-coupling simultaneously increases the self-energy effects. A careful study of this has been lacking, and in this paper we show how the inverse quasiparticle lifetime and energy renormalization on the surface of the topological insulator can be kept low close to the Fermi level by using a magnetic insulator with a sufficient easy-axis anisotropy. We find that the antiferromagnetic case is most interesting both from a theoretical and an experimental standpoint due to the increased electron-magnon coupling, combined with a reduced need for easy-axis anisotropy compared to the ferromagnetic case. We also consider a set of material and instrumental parameters where these self-energies should be measurable in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, paving the way for a measurement of the interfacial exchange coupling strength.
Rubidium adsorption on the surface of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is found to induce a strong downward band bending, leading to the appearance of a quantum-confined two dimensional electron gas states (2DEGs) in the conduction band. The 2D EGs shows a strong Rashba-type spin-orbit splitting, and it has previously been pointed out that this has relevance to nano-scale spintronics devices. The adsorption of Rb atoms, on the other hand, renders the surface very reactive and exposure to oxygen leads to a rapid degrading of the 2DEGs. We show that intercalating the Rb atoms, presumably into the van der Waals gaps in the quintuple layer structure of Bi$_2$Se$_3$, drastically reduces the surface reactivity while not affecting the promising electronic structure. The intercalation process is observed above room temperature and accelerated with increasing initial Rb coverage, an effect that is ascribed to the Coulomb interaction between the charged Rb ions. Coulomb repulsion is also thought to be responsible for a uniform distribution of Rb on the surface.
In ideal topological insulator (TI) films the bulk state, which is supposed to be insulating, should not provide any electric coupling between the two metallic surfaces. However, transport studies on existing TI films show that the topological states on opposite surfaces are electrically tied to each other at thicknesses far greater than the direct coupling limit where the surface wavefunctions overlap. Here, we show that as the conducting bulk channels are suppressed, the parasitic coupling effect diminishes and the decoupled surface channels emerge as expected for ideal TIs. In Bi2Se3 thin films with fully suppressed bulk states, the two surfaces, which are directly coupled below ~10 QL, become gradually isolated with increasing thickness and are completely decoupled beyond ~20 QL. On such a platform, it is now feasible to implement transport devices whose functionality relies on accessing the individual surface layers without any deleterious coupling effects.
