Gravitational instability plays an important role in driving gas accretion in massive protostellar discs. Particularly strong is the global gravitational instability, which arises when the disc mass is of order 0.1 of the mass of the central star and has a characteristic spatial scale much greater than the discs vertical scale-height. In this paper we use three-dimensional numerical hydrodynamics to study the development of gravitational instabilities in a disc which is embedded in a dense, gaseous envelope. We find that global gravitational instabilities are the dominant mode of angular momentum transport in the disc with infall, in contrast to otherwise identical isolated discs. The accretion torques created by low-order, global modes of the gravitational instability in a disc subject to infall are larger by a factor of several than an isolated disc of the same mass. We show that this global gravitational instability is driven by the strong vertical shear at the interface between the disc and the envelope, and suggest that this process may be an important means of driving accretion on to young stars.

We perform a population synthesis of protoplanetary discs including infall with a total of $50,000$ simulations using a 1D vertically integrated viscous evolution code, studying a large parameter space in final stellar mass. Initial conditions and in fall locations are chosen based on the results from a radiation-hydrodynamic population synthesis of circumstellar discs. We also consider a different infall prescription based on a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) collapse simulation in order to assess the influence of magnetic fields on disc formation. The duration of the infall phase is chosen to produce a stellar mass distribution in agreement with the observationally determined stellar initial mass function. We find that protoplanetary discs are very massive early in their lives. When averaged over the entire stellar population, the discs have masses of $sim 0.3$ and $0.1,mathrm{M_odot}$ for systems based on hydrodynamic or MHD initial conditions, respectively. In systems with final stellar mass $sim 1,mathrm{M_odot}$, we find disc masses of $sim 0.7,mathrm{M_odot}$ for the `hydro case and $sim 0.2,mathrm{M_odot}$ for the `MHD case at the end of the infall phase. Furthermore, the inferred total disc lifetimes are long, $approx 5-7,mathrm{Myr}$ on average, despite our choice of a high value of $10^{-2}$ for the background viscosity $alpha$-parameter. In addition, fragmentation is common in systems that are simulated using hydrodynamic cloud collapse, with more fragments of larger mass formed in more massive systems. In contrast, if disc formation is limited by magnetic fields, fragmentation is suppressed entirely.
We investigate the infall properties in a sample of 11 infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) showing blue-asymmetry signatures in HCO$^{+}$ J=1--0 line profiles. We used JCMT to conduct mapping observations in HCO$^{+}$ J=4--3 as well as single-pointing obser vations in HCO$^{+}$ J =3--2, towards 23 clumps in these IRDCs. We applied the HILL model to fit these observations and derived infall velocities in the range of 0.5-2.7 km s$^{-1}$, with a median value of 1.0 km s$^{-1}$, and obtained mass accretion rates of 0.5-14$times$10$^{-3}$ Msun yr$^{-1}$. These values are comparable to those found in massive star forming clumps in later evolutionary stages. These IRDC clumps are more likely to form star clusters. HCO$^{+}$ J =3--2 and HCO$^{+}$ J =1--0 were shown to trace infall signatures well in these IRDCs with comparable inferred properties. HCO$^{+}$ J=4--3, on the other hand, exhibits infall signatures only in a few very massive clumps, due to smaller opacties. No obvious correlation for these clumps was found between infall velocity and the NH3/CCS ratio.

This work extends previous kinematic studies of young stars in the Head of the Orion A cloud (OMC-1/2/3/4/5). It is based on large samples of infrared, optical, and X-ray selected pre-main sequence stars with reliable radial velocities and Gaia-deriv ed parallaxes and proper motions. Stellar kinematic groups are identified assuming they mimic the motion of their parental gas. Several groups are found to have peculiar kinematics: the NGC 1977 cluster and two stellar groups in the Extended Orion Nebula (EON) cavity are caught in the act of departing their birthplaces. The abnormal motion of NGC 1977 may have been caused by a global hierarchical cloud collapse, feedback by massive Ori OB1ab stars, supersonic turbulence, cloud-cloud collision, and/or slingshot effect; the former two models are favored by us. EON groups might have inherited anomalous motions of their parental cloudlets due to small-scale `rocket effects from nearby OB stars. We also identify sparse stellar groups to the east and west of Orion A that are drifting from the central region, possibly a slowly expanding halo of the Orion Nebula Cluster. We confirm previously reported findings of varying line-of-sight distances to different parts of the clouds Head with associated differences in gas velocity. Three-dimensional movies of star kinematics show contraction of the groups of stars in OMC-1 and global contraction of OMC-123 stars. Overall, the Head of Orion A region exhibits complex motions consistent with theoretical models involving hierarchical gravitational collapse in (possibly turbulent) clouds with OB stellar feedback.

Two aspects of filamentary molecular cloud evolution are addressed: (1) Exploring analytically the role of the environment for the evolution of filaments demonstrates that considering them in isolation (i.e. just addressing the fragmentation stabilit y) will result in unphysical conclusions about the filaments properties. Accretion can also explain the observed decorrelation between FWHM and peak column density. (2) Free-fall accretion onto finite filaments can lead to the characteristic fans of infrared-dark clouds around star-forming regions. The fans may form due to tidal forces mostly arising at the ends of the filaments, consistent with numerical models and earlier analytical studies.
The study of infall motion helps us to understand the initial stages of star formation. In this paper, we use the IRAM 30-m telescope to make mapping observations of 24 infall sources confirmed in previous work. The lines we use to track gas infall m otions are HCO+ (1-0) and H13CO+ (1-0). All 24 sources show HCO+ emissions, while 18 sources show H13CO+ emissions. The HCO+ integrated intensity maps of 17 sources show clear clumpy structures; for the H13CO+ line, 15 sources show clumpy structures. We estimated the column density of HCO+ and H13CO+ using the RADEX radiation transfer code, and the obtained [HCO+]/[H2] and [H13CO+]/[HCO+] of these sources are about 10^-11 ~ 10^-7 and 10^-3~1, respectively. Based on the asymmetry of the line profile of the HCO+, we distinguish these sources: 19 sources show blue asymmetric profiles, and the other sources show red profiles or symmetric peak profiles. For eight sources that have double-peaked blue line profiles and signal-to-noise ratios greater than 10, the RATRAN model is used to fit their HCO^+ (1-0) lines, and to estimate their infall parameters. The mean Vin of these sources are 0.3 ~ 1.3 km/s, and the Min are about 10^-3 ~ 10^-4 Msun/yr , which are consistent with the results of intermediate or massive star formation in previous studies. The Vin estimated from the Myers model are 0.1 ~ 1.6 km/s, and the Min are within 10^-3 ~ 10^-5 Msun/yr. In addition, some identified infall sources show other star-forming activities, such as outflows and maser emissions. Especially for those sources with a double-peaked blue asymmetric profile, most of them have both infall and outflow evidence.
