We study a phenomenological dark energy model which is rooted in the Veneziano ghost of QCD. In this dark energy model, the energy density of dark energy is proportional to Hubble parameter and the proportional coefficient is of the order $Lambda^3_{QCD}$, where $Lambda_{QCD}$ is the mass scale of QCD. The universe has a de Sitter phase at late time and begins to accelerate at redshift around $z_{acc}sim0.6$. We also fit this model and give the constraints on model parameters, with current observational data including SnIa, BAO, CMB, BBN and Hubble parameter data. We find that the squared sound speed of the dark energy is negative, which may cause an instability. We also study the cosmological evolution of the dark energy with interaction with cold dark matter.

A number of stability criteria exist for dark energy theories, associated with requiring the absence of ghost, gradient and tachyonic instabilities. Tachyonic instabilities are the least well explored of these in the dark energy context and we here d iscuss and derive criteria for their presence and size in detail. Our findings suggest that, while the absence of ghost and gradient instabilities is indeed essential for physically viable models and so priors associated with the absence of such instabilities significantly increase the efficiency of parameter estimations without introducing unphysical biases, this is not the case for tachyonic instabilities. Even strong such instabilities can be present without spoiling the cosmological validity of the underlying models. Therefore, we caution against using exclusion priors based on requiring the absence of (strong) tachyonic instabilities in deriving cosmological parameter constraints. We illustrate this by explicitly computing such constraints within the context of Horndeski theories, while quantifying the size and effect of related tachyonic instabilities.

Recently, the Planck collaboration has released the first cosmological papers providing the high resolution, full sky, maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. It is crucial to understand that whether the accelerating e xpansion of our universe at present is driven by an unknown energy component (Dark Energy) or a modification to general relativity (Modified Gravity). In this paper we study the coupled dark energy models, in which the quintessence scalar field nontrivially couples to the cold dark matter, with the strength parameter of interaction $beta$. Using the Planck data alone, we obtain that the strength of interaction between dark sectors is constrained as $beta < 0.102$ at $95%$ confidence level, which is tighter than that from the WMAP9 data alone. Combining the Planck data with other probes, like the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO), Type-Ia supernovae ``Union2.1 compilation and the CMB lensing data from Planck measurement, we find the tight constraint on the strength of interaction $beta < 0.052$ ($95%$ C.L.). Interestingly, we also find a non-zero coupling $beta = 0.078 pm 0.022$ ($68%$ C.L.) when we use the Planck, the ``SNLS supernovae samples, and the prior on the Hubble constant from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) together. This evidence for the coupled dark energy models mainly comes from a tension between constraints on the Hubble constant from the Planck measurement and the local direct $H_0$ probes from HST.

In this paper we introduce the fractional dark energy model, in which the accelerated expansion of the Universe is driven by a nonrelativistic gas (composed by either fermions or bosons) with a noncanonical kinetic term. The kinetic energy is inverse ly proportional to the cube of the absolute value of the momentum for a fluid with an equation of state parameter equal to minus one, and whose corresponding energy density mimics the one of the cosmological constant. In the general case, the dark energy equation of state parameter (times three) is precisely the exponent of the momentum in the kinetic term. We show that this inverse momentum operator appears in fractional quantum mechanics and it is the inverse of the Riesz fractional derivative. The observed vacuum energy can be obtained through the integral of the Fermi-Dirac (or Bose-Einstein) distribution and the lowest allowed energy of the particles. Finally, a possible thermal production and fate of fractional dark energy is investigated.
The differential age data of astrophysical objects that have evolved passivelly during the history of the universe (e.g. red galaxies) allows to test theoretical cosmological models through the predicted Hubble function expressed in terms of the reds hift $z$, $H(z)$. We use the observational data for $H(z)$ to test unified scenarios for dark matter and dark energy. Specifically, we focus our analysis on the Generalized Chaplygin Gas (GCG) and the viscous fluid (VF) models. For the GCG model, it is shown that the unified scenario for dark energy and dark matter requires some priors. For the VF model we obtain estimations for the free parameters that may be compared with further analysis mainly at perturbative level.
