We present a preliminary experimental study of the dependence on optical depth of slow and stored light pulses in Rb vapor. In particular, we characterize the efficiency of slow and stored light as a function of Rb density; pulse duration, delay and storage time; and control field intensity. Experimental results are in good qualitative agreement with theoretical calculations based on a simplified three-level model at moderate densities.

We report a preliminary experimental study of EIT and stored light in the high optical depth regime. In particular, we characterize two ways to mitigate radiation trapping, a decoherence mechanism at high atomic density: nitrogen as buffer gas, and a long, narrow cell geometry. Initial results show the promise of both approaches in minimizing radiation trapping, but also reveal problems such as optical pumping into trapped end-states. We also observe distortion in EIT lineshapes at high optical depth, a result of interference from four-wave mixing. Experimental results are in good qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions.
We consider propagation, storing and retrieval of slow light (probe beam) in a resonant atomic medium illuminated by two control laser beams of larger intensity. The probe and two control beams act on atoms in a tripod configuration of the light-matt er coupling. The first control beam is allowed to have an orbital angular momentum (OAM). Application of the second vortex-free control laser ensures the adiabatic (lossles) propagation of the probe beam at the vortex core where the intensity of the first control laser goes to zero. Storing and release of the probe beam is accomplished by switching off and on the control laser beams leading to the transfer of the optical vortex from the first control beam to the regenerated probe field. A part of the stored probe beam remains frozen in the medium in the form of atomic spin excitations, the number of which increases with increasing the intensity of the second control laser. We analyse such losses in the regenerated probe beam and provide conditions for the optical vortex of the control beam to be transferred efficiently to the restored probe beam.
We analyze the nonlinear dynamics of atomic dark states in Lambda configuration that interact with light at exact resonance. We found a generalization of shape-preserving pulses [R. Grobe, F. T. Hioe, and J. H. Eberly, Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 3183 (1994 )] and show that the condition for adiabaticity of the atomic dynamics is never violated, as long as spontaneous emission is negligible.
We demonstrate a single-photon stored-light interferometer, where a photon is stored in a laser-cooled atomic ensemble in the form of a Rydberg polariton with a spatial extent of $10 times1times1mu m^3$. The photon is subject to a Ramsey sequence, i. e. `split into a superposition of two paths. After a delay of up to 450 ns, the two paths are recombined to give an output dependent on their relative phase. The superposition time of 450 ns is equivalent to a free-space propagation distance of 135 m. We show that the interferometer fringes are sensitive to external fields, and suggest that stored-light interferometry could be useful for localized sensing applications.
We demonstrate that Aharonov-Albert-Vaidman (AAV) weak values have a direct relationship with the response function of a system, and have a much wider range of applicability in both the classical and quantum domains than previously thought. Using thi s idea, we have built an optical system, based on a birefringent photonic crystal, with an infinite number of weak values. In this system, the propagation speed of a polarized light pulse displays both superluminal and slow light behavior with a sharp transition between the two regimes. We show that this systems response possesses two-dimensional, vortex-antivortex phase singularities. Important consequences for optical signal processing are discussed.
