In this paper, we present the equivalent medium theory by using the linear response theory. It is found that, under the condition of the linear response, a series of different media with different refractive indices $n_{i}(omega)$ and lengths $d_{i}$ can be equivalent to an effective medium with the volume-averaged refractive index $frac{1}{D}sum_{i=1}^{N}n_{i}(omega)d_{i}$ and the total length $D=sum_{i=1i}^{N}d_{i}$,where $N$ is the number of different media. Based on this equivalent theory, it is a simple but very useful method to design the effective medium with any desirable dispersion properties. As an example, we present a proposal to obtain the enhancement or reduction of the refractive index without absorption and the large dispersion without obvious absorption by assembling different linear dispersive gain and absorptive media.

Using detailed simulations we investigate the magnetic response of metamaterials consisting of pairs of parallel slabs or combinations of slabs with wires (including the fishnet design) as the length-scale of the structures is reduced from mm to nm. We observe the expected saturation of the magnetic resonance frequency when the structure length-scale goes to the sub-micron regime, as well as weakening of the effective permeability resonance and reduction of the spectral width of the negative permeability region. All these results are explained by using an equivalent resistor-inductor-capacitor (RLC) circuit model, taking into account the current-connected kinetic energy of the electrons inside the metallic parts through an equivalent inductance, added to the magnetic field inductance in the unit-cell. Using this model we derive simple optimization rules for achieving optical negative permeability metamaterials of improved performance. Finally, we analyze the magnetic response of the fishnet design and we explain its superior performance regarding the high attainable magnetic resonance frequency, as well as its inferior performance regarding the width of the negative permeability region.
Fluctuation dissipation theorems connect the linear response of a physical system to a perturbation to the steady-state correlation functions. Until now, most of these theorems have been derived for finite-dimensional systems. However, many relevant physical processes are described by systems of infinite dimension in the Gaussian regime. In this work, we find a linear response theory for quantum Gaussian systems subject to time dependent Gaussian channels. In particular, we establish a fluctuation dissipation theorem for the covariance matrix that connects its linear response at any time to the steady state two-time correlations. The theorem covers non-equilibrium scenarios as it does not require the steady state to be at thermal equilibrium. We further show how our results simplify the study of Gaussian systems subject to a time dependent Lindbladian master equation. Finally, we illustrate the usage of our new scheme through some examples. Due to broad generality of the Gaussian formalism, we expect our results to find an application in many physical platforms, such as opto-mechanical systems in the presence of external noise or driven quantum heat devices.
A foundational question in relativistic fluid mechanics concerns the properties of the hydrodynamic gradient expansion at large orders. We establish the precise conditions under which this gradient expansion diverges for a broad class of microscopic theories admitting a relativistic hydrodynamic limit, in the linear regime. Our result does not rely on highly symmetric fluid flows utilized by previous studies of heavy-ion collisions and cosmology. The hydrodynamic gradient expansion diverges whenever energy density or velocity fields have support in momentum space exceeding a critical momentum, and converges otherwise. This critical momentum is an intrinsic property of the microscopic theory and is set by branch point singularities of hydrodynamic dispersion relations.
In this paper, we study the interactions of electromagnetic waves with a non-dispersive dynamic medium that is temporally dependent. Electromagnetic fields under material time-modulation conserve their momentum but not their energy. We assume a time- variation of the permittivity, permeability and conductivity and derive the appropriate time-domain solutions based on the causality state at a past observation time. We formulate a time-transitioning state matrix and connect the unusual energy transitions of electromagnetic fields in time-varying media with the exceptional point theory. This state-matrix approach allows us to analyze further the electromagnetic waves in terms of parity and time-reversal symmetries and signify parity-time symmetric wave-states without the presence of a spatially symmetric distribution of gain and loss, or any inhomogeneities and material periodicity. This paper provides a useful arsenal to study electromagnetic wave phenomena under time-varying media and points out novel physical insights connecting the resulting energy transitions and electromagnetic modes with exceptional point physics and operator symmetries.
We present an analytic perturbation theory which extends the paraxial approximation for a common cylindrically symmetric stable optical resonator and incorporates the differential, polarization-dependent reflectivity of a Bragg mirror. The degeneracy of Laguerre-Gauss modes with distinct orbital angular momentum (OAM) and polarization, but identical transverse order N, will become observably lifted at sufficiently small size and high finesse. The resulting paraxial eigenmodes possess two distinct OAM components, the fractional composition subtly depending on mirror structure.
