We study the connection between the appearance of a `metastable behavior of weakly chaotic orbits, characterized by a constant rate of increase of the Tsallis q-entropy (Tsallis 1988), and the solutions of the variational equations of motion for the same orbits. We demonstrate that the variational equations yield transient solutions, lasting for long time intervals, during which the length of deviation vectors of nearby orbits grows in time almost as a power-law. The associated power exponent can be simply related to the entropic exponent for which the q-entropy exhibits a constant rate of increase. This analysis leads to the definition of a new sensitive indicator distinguishing regular from weakly chaotic orbits, that we call `Average Power Law Exponent (APLE). We compare the APLE with other established indicators of the literature. In particular, we give examples of application of the APLE in a) a thin separatrix layer of the standard map, b) the stickiness region around an island of stability in the same map, and c) the web of resonances of a 4D symplectic map. In all these cases we identify weakly chaotic orbits exhibiting the `metastable behavior associated with the Tsallis q-entropy.

Methods are presented to evaluate the entropy production rate in stochastic reactive systems. These methods are shown to be consistent with known results from nonequilibrium chemical thermodynamics. Moreover, it is proved that the time average of the entropy production rate can be decomposed into the contributions of the cycles obtained from the stoichiometric matrix in both stochastic processes and deterministic systems. These methods are applied to a complex reaction network constructed on the basis of Roesslers reinjection principle and featuring chemical chaos.
The steady state for a system of N particle under the influence of an external field and a Gaussian thermostat and colliding with random virtual scatterers can be obtained explicitly in the limit of small field. We show the sequence of steady state d istribution, as N varies, forms a chaotic sequence in the sense that the k particle marginal, in the limit of large N, is the k-fold tensor product of the 1 particle marginal. We also show that the chaoticity properties holds in the stronger form of entropic chaoticity.
We present numerical simulations for the three-body problem, in which three particles lie at rest at the vertex of a perturbed equilateral triangle. In the unperturbed problem, the three particles fall towards the center of mass of the system to form a three-body collision, or singularity, where the particles overlap in space and time. By perturbing the initial positions of the particles, we are able to study chaos in the vicinity of the singularity. Here we cover the full range in parameter space for binary formation due to three-body interactions of isolated single stars, covering the singular region corresponding to an equilateral triangle and extending to sufficiently deformed triangles that we enter the binary-single scattering regime (i.e., one side of the triangle is very short and the other two are very long). We make phase space plots to study the regular and ergodic subsets of our simulations independently and derive the expected properties of the left-over binaries from three-body binary formation in isotropic cluster environments. We further provide fits to the ergodic subset to characterize the properties of the left-over binaries. We identify the discrepancy between the statistical theory and the simulations to the regular subset of interactions, which exhibit only weak chaos. As we decrease the scale of the perturbations in the initial positions, the phase space becomes entirely dominated by regular interactions, according to our metric for chaos.
We study the conductance of chaotic or disordered wires in a situation where equilibrium transport decomposes into biased diffusion and a counter-moving regular current. A possible realization is a semiconductor nanostructure with transversal magneti c field and suitably patterned surfaces. We find a non-trivial dependence of the conductance on the wire length which differs qualitatively from Ohms law by the existence of a characteristic length scale and a finite saturation value.
This paper presents an {it ab initio} derivation of the expression given by irreversible thermodynamics for the rate of entropy production for different classes of diffusive processes. The first class are Lorentz gases, where non-interacting particle s move on a spatially periodic lattice, and collide elastically with fixed scatterers. The second class are periodic systems where $N$ particles interact with each other, and one of them is a tracer particle which diffuses among the cells of the lattice. We assume that, in either case, the dynamics of the system is deterministic and hyperbolic, with positive Lyapunov exponents. This work extends methods originally developed for a chaotic two-dimensional model of diffusion, the multi-baker map, to higher dimensional, continuous time dynamical systems appropriate for systems with one or more moving particles. Here we express the rate of entropy production in terms of hydrodynamic measures that are determined by the fractal properties of microscopic hydrodynamic modes that describe the slowest decay of the system to an equilibrium state.
