A paradigm model of modern atom optics is studied, strongly interacting ultracold bosons in an optical lattice. This many-body system can be artificially opened in a controlled manner by modern experimental techniques. We present results based on a n on-hermitian effective Hamiltonian whose quantum spectrum is analyzed. The direct access to the spectrum of the metastable many-body system allows us to easily identify relatively stable quantum states, corresponding to previously predicted solitonic many-body structures.

We study the time evolution of ultra-cold atoms in an accelerated optical lattice. For a Bose- Einstein condensate with a narrow quasi-momentum distribution in a shallow optical lattice the decay of the survival probability in the ground band has a s tep-like structure. In this regime we establish a connection between the wave function renormalization parameter Z introduced in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2699 (2001)] to characterize non-exponential decay and the phenomenon of resonantly enhanced tunneling, where the decay rate is peaked for particular values of the lattice depth and the accelerating force.
In this article, we present theoretical as well as experimental results on resonantly enhanced tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices both in the linear case and for small nonlinearities. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of condensates in optical lattices for simulating Hamiltonians originally used for describing solid state phenomena.
