In this paper we present two (a priori independent) derivations of the eikonal operator in string-brane scattering. The first one is obtained by summing surfaces with any number of boundaries, while in the second one the eikonal operator is derived f rom the three-string vertex in a suitable light-cone gauge. This second derivation shows that the bosonic oscillators present in the leading eikonal operator are to be identified with the string bosonic oscillators in a suitable light-cone gauge, while the first one shows that it exponentiates recovering unitarity. This paper is a review of results obtained in two previous publications of the same authors.

In this talk we will describe the problems that one encounters when one tries to connect string theory with particle phenomenology. Then, in order to have chiral matter describing quarks and leptons, we introduce the magnetized D branes. Finally, as an explicit example of a string extension of the Standard Model, we will describe the one constructed by Ibanez, Marchesano and Rabadan.
In this note we follow the historical development of the ideas that led to the formulation of String Theory. We start from the inspired guess of Veneziano and its extension to the scattering of $N$ scalar particles, then we describe how the study of its factorization properties allowed to identify the physical spectrum making the string worldsheet manifest and finally we discuss how the critical values of the intercept of the Regge trajectory and of the critical dimension were fixed to 1 and 26.

In this contribution we go through the developments that in the years 1968 to 1974 led from the Veneziano model to the bosonic string.
