We consider scalar fields which are coupled to Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant, and construct periodic solutions perturbatively. In particular, we study tachyonic scalar fields whose mass is at or above the Breitenlohner-Freedm an bound in four, five, and seven spacetime dimensions. The critical amplitude of the leading order perturbation, for which the perturbative expansion breaks down, increases as we consider less massive fields. We present various examples including a model with a self-interacting scalar field which is derived from a consistent truncation of IIB supergravity.
We study three-dimensional superconformal field theories on wrapped M5-branes. Applying the gauge/gravity duality and the recently proposed 3d-3d relation, we deduce quantitative predictions for the perturbative free energy of a Chern-Simons theory o n hyperbolic 3-space. Remarkably, the perturbative expansion is expected to terminate at two-loops in the large N limit. We check the correspondence numerically in a number of examples, and confirm the N^3 scaling with precise coefficients.

We consider $AdS_2$ solutions of M-theory which are obtained by twisted compactifications of M2-branes on a complex curve. They are of a generalized class, in the sense that the non-abelian part of the connection for the holomorphic bundle over the s upersymmetric cycle is nontrivial. They are solutions of $U(1)^4$ gauged supergravity in $D=4$, with magnetic flux over the curve, and then uplifted to $D=11$. We discuss the behavior of conformal fixed points as a function of the non-abelian connection. We also describe how they fit into the general description of wrapped M2-brane $AdS_2$ solutions and their higher-order generalizations, by showing that they satisfy the master equation for the eight-dimensional Kahler base space.

We consider how to take an orbifold reduction for the multiple M2-brane theory recently proposed by Bagger and Lambert, and discuss its relation to Chern-Simons theories. Starting from the infinite dimensional 3-algebra realized as the Nambu bracket on a 3-torus, we first suggest an orbifolding prescription for various fields. Then we introduce a second truncation, which effectively reduces the internal space to a 2-torus. Eventually one obtains a large-N limit of Chern-Simons gauge theories coupled to matter fields. We consider an abelian orbifold C^4/Z_n, and illustrate how one can arrive at the N=6 supersymmetric theories with gauge groups U(N) x U(N) and Chern-Simons levels (k,-k), as recently constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena.
We continue our study of BPS equations and supersymmetric configurations in the Bagger-Lambert theory. The superalgebra allows three different types of central extensions which correspond to compounds of various M-theory objects: M2-branes, M5-branes , gravity waves and Kaluza-Klein monopoles which intersect or have overlaps with the M2-branes whose dynamics is given by the Bagger-Lambert action. As elementary objects they are all 1/2-BPS, and multiple intersections of $n$-branes generically break the supersymmetry into $1/2^n$, as it is well known. But a particular composite of M-branes can preserve from 1/16 up to 3/4 of the original ${cal N}=8$ supersymmetries as previously discovered. In this paper we provide the M-theory interpretation for various BPS equations, and also present explicit solutions to some 1/2-BPS equations.
We present new classes of explicit supersymmetric AdS_3 solutions of type IIB supergravity with non-vanishing five-form flux and AdS_2 solutions of D=11 supergravity with electric four-form flux. The former are dual to two-dimensional SCFTs with (0,2 ) supersymmetry and the latter to supersymmetric quantum mechanics with two supercharges. We also investigate more general classes of AdS_3 solutions of type IIB supergravity and AdS_2 solutions of D=11 supergravity which in addition have non-vanishing three-form flux and magnetic four-form flux, respectively. The construction of these more general solutions makes essential use of the Chern-Simons or transgression terms in the Bianchi identity or the equation of motion of the field strengths in the supergravity theories. We construct infinite new classes of explicit examples and for some of the type IIB solutions determine the central charge of the dual SCFTs. The type IIB solutions with non-vanishing three-form flux that we construct include a two-torus, and after two T-dualities and an S-duality, we obtain new AdS_3 solutions with only the NS fields being non-trivial.
The seven and nine dimensional geometries associated with certain classes of supersymmetric $AdS_3$ and $AdS_2$ solutions of type IIB and D=11 supergravity, respectively, have many similarities with Sasaki-Einstein geometry. We further elucidate thei r properties and also generalise them to higher odd dimensions by introducing a new class of complex geometries in $2n+2$ dimensions, specified by a Riemannian metric, a scalar field and a closed three-form, which admit a particular kind of Killing spinor. In particular, for $nge 3$, we show that when the geometry in $2n+2$ dimensions is a cone we obtain a class of geometries in $2n+1$ dimensions, specified by a Riemannian metric, a scalar field and a closed two-form, which includes the seven and nine-dimensional geometries mentioned above when $n=3,4$, respectively. We also consider various ansatz for the geometries and construct infinite classes of explicit examples for all $n$.
In this paper we generalize the work of Lin, Lunin and Maldacena on the classification of 1/2-BPS M-theory solutions to a specific class of 1/4-BPS configurations. We are interested in the solutions of 11 dimensional supergravity with $SO(3)times SO( 4)$ symmetry, and it is shown that such solutions are constructed over a one-parameter familiy of 4 dimensional almost Calabi-Yau spaces. Through analytic continuations we can obtain M-theory solutions having $AdS_2times S^3$ or $AdS_3times S^2$ factors. It is shown that our result is equivalent to the $AdS$ solutions which have been recently reported as the near-horizon geometry of M2 or M5-branes wrapped on 2 or 4-cycles in Calabi-Yau threefolds. We also discuss the hierarchy of M-theory bubbles with different number of supersymmetries.
