The substitutional dependence of valence and spin-state configurations of Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x =$ 0, 0.05, 0.11, 0.17, and 0.38) is investigated with near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure at the $L_{2,3}$ edges of Fe, Co, and As. Th e present data provide direct spectroscopic evidence for an effectively isovalent substitution of Fe$^{2+}$ by Co$^{2+}$, which is in contrast to the widely assumed Co-induced electron-doping effect. Moreover, the data reveal that not only does the Fe valency remain completely unaffected across the entire doping range, but so do the Co and As valencies as well. The data underline a prominent role of the hybridization between (Fe,Co) 3$d_{xy}$, $d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$ orbitals and As $4s/4p$ states for the band structure in $A$(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and suggest that the covalency of the (Fe,Co)-As bond is a key parameter for the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity.

Chiral nematic liquid crystals sometimes form blue phases characterized by spirals twisting in different directions. By combining model calculations with neutron-scattering experiments, we show that the magnetic analogue of blue phases does form in t he chiral itinerant magnet MnSi in a large part of the phase diagram. The properties of this blue phase explain a number of previously reported puzzling features of MnSi such as partial magnetic order and a two-component specific-heat and thermal-expansion anomaly at the magnetic transition.
We report here the results of scanning tunneling spectroscopic experiments performed on hole doped NdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-delta}$ single crystals of $T_c$ values of 76 K, 93.5 K and 95.5 K. The energy gaps are observed to be increasing with decreasing $ T_c$ values. The coherence peaks are asymmetric with the peaks at the filled states being larger than those at the empty ones. The asymmetry increases with decreasing $T_c$. The observed asymmetry and its $T_c$ dependence can be explained by considering the Mott insulating nature of the material at the undoped state.
In NdBa_2[Cu_{1-y}Ni_y]_3O_{7-delta}, magnetic Ni-impurities suppress Tc but at the same time the pseudogap is strongly enhanced. This unique feature makes it an ideal system to study possible relations between the anomalous Nernst effect, supercondu ctivity and the pseudogap. We present Nernst effect measurements on a series of optimally doped (O_7) and underdoped (O_{6.8}) samples with Ni contents ranging from y=0 to 0.12. In all samples an onset of the Nernst signal is found at T^ u > Tc. For the optimally doped samples T^ u and Tc decrease simultaneously with increasing Ni content. The underdoped samples show a different behavior, i.e. the onset of the Nernst signal is hardly affected by increasing the Ni content from y=0 to 0.03. Irrespective of the oxygen content, T^ u clearly does not track the enhanced pseudogap temperature T*.
