The entropy production rate of nonequilibrium systems is studied via the Fokker-Planck equation. This approach, based on the entropy production rate equation given by Schnakenberg from a master equation, requires information of the transition rate of the system under study. We obtain the transition rate from the conditional probability extracted from the Fokker-Planck equation and then derive a new and more operable expression for the entropy production rate. Examples are presented as applications of our approach.

It is shown that a small system in thermodynamic equilibrium with a finite thermostat can have a q-exponential probability distribution which closely depends on the energy nonextensivity and the particle number of the thermostat. The distribution fun ction will reduce to the exponential one at the thermodynamic limit. However, the nonextensivity of the system should not be neglected.

We investigate the general property of the energy fluctuation for the canonical ensemble in Tsallis statistics and the ensemble equivalence. By taking the ideal gas and the non-interacting harmonic oscillators as examples, we show that, when the part icle number N is large enough, the relative fluctuation of the energy is proportional to 1/N in the new statistics, instead of square root of 1/N in Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics. Thus the equivalence between the microcanonical and the canonical ensemble still holds in Tsallis statistics.

We investigate the dispersion relation and Landau damping of ion acoustic waves in the collisionless magnetic-field-free plasma if it is described by the nonextensive q-distributions of Tsallis statistics. We show that the increased numbers of supert hermal particles and low velocity particles can explain the strengthened and weakened modes of Landau damping, respectively, with the q-distribution. When the ion temperature is equal to the electron temperature, the weakly damped waves are found to be the distributions with small values of q.

The property of Tsallis entropy is examined when considering tow systems with different temperatures to be in contact with each other and to reach the thermal equilibrium. It is verified that the total Tsallis entropy of the two systems cannot decrea se after the contact of the systems. We derived an inequality for the change of Tsallis entropy in such an example, which leads to a generalization of the principle of entropy increase in the framework of nonextensive statistical mechanics.

We investigate the nonextensivity and the q-distribution of a relativistic gas under an external electromagnetic field. We derive a formula expression of the nonextensive parameter q based on the relativistic generalized Boltzmann equation, the relat ivistic q-H theorem and the relativistic version of q-power-law distribution function in the nonextensive q-kinetic theory. We thus provide the connection between the parameter 1-q and the differentiation of the temperature field of the gas as well as the four-potential with respect to time and space coordinates, and therefore present the nonextensivity for the gas a clearly physical meaning.

The solar corona is a complex system, with nonisothermal plasma and being in the self-gravitating field of the Sun. So the corona plasma is not only a nonequilibrium system but also a nonextensive one. We estimate the parameter of describing the degr ee of nonextensivity of the corona plasma and study the generalization of the solar wind speed theory in the framework of nonextensive statistical mechanics. It is found that, when use Chapmans corona model (1957) as the radial distribution of the temperature in the corona, the nonextensivity reduces the gas pressure outward and thus leads a significant deceleration effect on the radial speed of the solar wind.
