The coherent spin dynamics of resident carriers, electrons and holes, in semiconductor quantum structures is studied by periodical optical excitation using short laser pulses and in an external magnetic field. The generation and dephasing of spin pol arization in an ensemble of carrier spins, for which the relaxation time of individual spins exceeds the repetition period of the laser pulses, are analyzed theoretically. Spin polarization accumulation is manifested either as resonant spin amplification or as mode-locking of carrier spin coherences. It is shown that both regimes have the same origin, while their appearance is determined by the optical pump power and the spread of spin precession frequencies in the ensemble.
The electron spin coherence in n-doped and undoped, self-assembled CdSe/Zn(S,Se) quantum dots has been studied by time-resolved pump-probe Kerr rotation. Long-lived spin coherence persisting up to 13 ns after spin orientation has been found in the n- doped quantum dots, outlasting significantly the lifetimes of charge neutral and negatively charged excitons of 350 - 530 ps. The electron spin dephasing time as long as 5.6 ns has been measured in a magnetic field of 0.25 T. Hyperfine interaction of resident electrons with a nuclear spin fluctuations is suggested as the main limiting factor for the dephasing time. The efficiency of this mechanism in II-VI and III-V quantum dots is analyzed.
A description of spin Faraday rotation, Kerr rotation and ellipticity signals for single- and multi-layer ensembles of singly charged quantum dots (QDs) is developed. The microscopic theory considers both the single pump-pulse excitation and the effe ct of a train of such pulses, which in the case of long resident-electron spin coherence time leads to a stationary distribution of the electron spin polarization. The calculations performed for single-color and two-color pump-probe setups show that the three experimental techniques: Faraday rotation, Kerr rotation and ellipticity measurements provide complementary information about an inhomogeneous ensemble of QDs. The microscopic theory developed for a three-dimensional ensemble of QDs is shown to agree with the phenomenological description of these effects. The typical time-dependent traces of pump-probe Faraday rotation, Kerr rotation and ellipticity signals are calculated for various experimental conditions.

We show that the spins of all electrons, each confined in a quantum dot of an (In,Ga)As/GaAs dot ensemble, can be driven into a single mode of precession about a magnetic field. This regime is achieved by allowing only a single mode within the electr on spin precession spectrum of the ensemble to be synchronized with a train of periodic optical excitation pulses. Under this condition a nuclei induced frequency focusing leads to a shift of all spin precession frequencies into the synchronized mode. The macroscopic magnetic moment of the electron spins that is created in this regime precesses without dephasing.
