Over 800 sq. deg. of high Galactic latitude sky have been mapped at 21 cm with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). An improved knowledge of the telescopes beam characteristics has allowed us to reliably map not only regions of high column density, but also such regions as ELAIS N1, a targeted Spitzer field, which have very low HI column density. The additional fields we have observed cover a cross-section of dynamically and chemically interesting regions as indicated by the presence of intermediate/high velocity gas and/or anomalous far-IR (dust) colour.

Studies of nearby galaxies including the Milky Way have provided fundamental information on the evolution of structure in the Universe, the existence and nature of dark matter, the origin and evolution of galaxies, and the global features of star for mation. Yet despite decades of work, many of the most basic aspects of galaxies and their environments remain a mystery. In this paper we describe some outstanding problems in this area and the ways in which large radio facilities will contribute to further progress.
The Leading Arm of the Magellanic System is a tidally formed HI feature extending $sim 60arcdeg$ from the Magellanic Clouds ahead of their direction of motion. Using atomic hydrogen (HI) data from the Galactic All Sky-Survey (GASS), supplemented with data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have found evidence for an interaction between a cloud in the Leading Arm and the Galactic disk where the Leading Arm crosses the Galactic plane. The interaction occurs at velocities permitted by Galactic rotation, which allows us to derive a kinematic distance to the cloud of 21 kpc, suggesting that the Leading Arm crosses the Galactic Plane at a Galactic radius of $Rapprox 17$ kpc.
