The goal of this short note is to study the secant varieties of the triple Segre product of type (1,a,b) by means of the standard tools of combinatorial commutative algebra. We reprove and extend to arbitrary characteristic results of Landsberg and W eyman regarding the defining ideal and the Cohen-Macaulay property of the secant varieties. Furthermore for these varieties we compute the degree and give a bound for their Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity which is sharp in many cases.
What kind of reduced monomial schemes can be obtained as a Grobner degeneration of a smooth projective variety? Our conjectured answer is: only Stanley-Reisner schemes associated to acyclic Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. This would imply, in pa rticular, that only curves of genus zero have such a degeneration. We prove this conjecture for degrevlex orders, for elliptic curves over real number fields, for boundaries of cross-polytopes, and for leafless graphs. We discuss consequences for rational and F-rational singularities of algebras with straightening laws.
Jet schemes and arc spaces received quite a lot of attention by researchers after their introduction, due to J. Nash, and established their importance as an object of study in M. Kontsevichs motivic integration theory. Several results point out that jet schemes carry a rich amount of geometrical information about the original object they stem from, whereas, from an algebraic point of view, little is know about them. In this paper we study some algebraic properties of jet schemes ideals of pfaffian varieties and we determine under which conditions the corresponding jet scheme varieties are irreducible.
Inspired by work of Cartwright and Sturmfels, in a previous paper we introduced two classes of multigraded ideals named after them. These ideals are defined in terms of properties of their multigraded generic initial ideals. The goal of this paper is showing that three families of ideals that have recently attracted the attention of researchers are Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals. More specifically, we prove that binomial edge ideals, multigraded homogenizations of linear spaces, and multiview ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals, hence recovering and extending recent results of Herzog-Hibi-Hreinsdottir-Kahle-Rauh, Ohtani, Ardila-Boocher, Aholt-Sturmfels-Thomas, and Binglin Li. We also propose a conjecture on the rigidity of local cohomology modules of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals, that was inspired by a theorem of Brion. We provide some evidence for the conjecture by proving it in the monomial case.
Let I be either the ideal of maximal minors or the ideal of 2-minors of a row graded or column graded matrix of linear forms L. In two previous papers we showed that I is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal, that is, the multigraded generic initial ideal gi n(I) of I is radical (and essentially independent of the term order chosen). In this paper we describe generators and prime decomposition of gin(I) in terms of data related to the linear dependences among the row or columns of the submatrices of L. In the case of 2-minors we also give a closed formula for its multigraded Hilbert series.
We describe the universal Groebner basis of the ideal of maximal minors and the ideal of $2$-minors of a multigraded matrix of linear forms. Our results imply that the ideals are radical and provide bounds on the regularity. In particular, the ideals of maximal minors have linear resolutions. Our main theoretical contribution consists of introducing two new classes of ideals named after Cartwright and Sturmfels, and proving that they are closed under multigraded hyperplane sections. The gins of the ideals that we study enjoy special properties.
We show that the ideal generated by the $(n-2)$ minors of a general symmetric $n$ by $n$ matrix has an initial ideal that is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the boundary complex of a simplicial polytope and has the same Betti numbers.
Ideals generated by pfaffians are of interest in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, as well as in combinatorics. In this article we compute multiplicity and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of pfaffian ideals of ladders. We give explicit formu las for some families of ideals, and indicate a procedure that allows to recursively compute the invariants of any pfaffian ideal of ladder. Our approach makes an essential use of liaison theory.

A set of polynomials G in a polynomial ring S over a field is said to be a universal Gru007foebner basis, if G is a Gru007foebner basis with respect to every term order on S. Twenty years ago Bernstein, Sturmfels, and Zelevinsky proved that the set o f the maximal minors of a matrix X of variables is a universal Gru007foebner basis. Boocher recently proved that any initial ideal of the ideal of maximal minors of X has a linear resolution. In this paper we give a quick proof of the results mentioned above. Our proof is based on a specialization argument. Then we show that similar statements hold in a more general setting, for matrices of linear forms satisfying certain homogeneity conditions. More precisely, we show that the set of maximal minors of a matrix L of linear forms is a universal Gru007foebner basis for the ideal I that it generates, provided that L is column-graded. Under the same assumption we show that every initial ideal of I has a linear resolution. Furthermore, the projective dimension of I and of its initial ideals is n-m, unless I=0 or a column of L is identically 0. Here L is a matrix of size m times n, and m is smaller than or equal to n. If instead L is row-graded, then we prove that I has a universal Gru007foebner basis of elements of degree m and that every initial ideal of I has a linear resolution, provided that I has the expected codimension. The proofs are based on a rigidity property of radical Borel fixed ideals in a multigraded setting: We prove that if two Borel fixed ideals I and J have the same multigraded Hilbert series and I is radical, then I = J. We also discuss some of the consequences of this rigidity property.
This is a survey paper on commutative Koszul algebras and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. We describe several techniques to establish the Koszulness of algebras. We discuss variants of the Koszul property such as strongly Koszul, absolutely Koszul an d universally Koszul. We present several open problems related with these notions and their local variants.
