We analyze the evolution of the interplanetary magnetic field spatial structure by examining the inner heliospheric autocorrelation function, using Helios 1 and Helios 2 in situ observations. We focus on the evolution of the integral length scale (la mbda) anisotropy associated with the turbulent magnetic fluctuations, with respect to the aging of fluid parcels traveling away from the Sun, and according to whether the measured lambda is principally parallel (lambda_parallel) or perpendicular (lambda_perp) to the direction of a suitably defined local ensemble average magnetic field B0. We analyze a set of 1065 24-hour long intervals (covering full missions). For each interval, we compute the magnetic autocorrelation function, using classical single-spacecraft techniques, and estimate lambda with help of two different proxies for both Helios datasets. We find that close to the Sun, lambda_parallel < lambda_perp. This supports a slab-like spectral model, where the population of fluctuations having wavevector k parallel to B0 is much larger than the one with k-vector perpendicular. A population favoring perpendicular k-vectors would be considered quasi-two dimensional (2D). Moving towards 1 AU, we find a progressive isotropization of lambda and a trend to reach an inverted abundance, consistent with the well-known result at 1 AU that lambda_parallel > lambda_perp, usually interpreted as a dominant quasi-2D picture over the slab picture. Thus, our results are consistent with driving modes having wavevectors parallel to B0 near Sun, and a progressive dynamical spectral transfer of energy to modes with perpendicular wavevectors as the solar wind parcels age while moving from the Sun to 1 AU.
We studied the non-equilibrium dynamics of the q-state Potts model in the square lattice, after a quench to sub-critical temperatures. By means of a continuous time Monte Carlo algorithm (non-conserved order parameter dynamics) we analyzed the long t erm behavior of the energy and relaxation time for a wide range of quench temperatures and system sizes. For q>4 we found the existence of different dynamical regimes, according to quench temperature range. At low (but finite) temperatures and very long times the Lifshitz-Allen-Cahn domain growth behavior is interrupted with finite probability when the system stuck in highly symmetric non-equilibrium metastable states, which induce activation in the domain growth, in agreement with early predictions of Lifshitz [JETP 42, 1354 (1962)]. Moreover, if the temperature is very low, the system always gets stuck at short times in a highly disordered metastable states with finite life time, which have been recently identified as glassy states. The finite size scaling properties of the different relaxation times involved, as well as their temperature dependency are analyzed in detail.
We study the sodium D lines (D1: 5895.92 AA; D2: 5889.95 AA) in late-type dwarf stars. The stars have spectral types between F6 and M5.5 (B-V between 0.457 and 1.807) and metallicity between [Fe/H] = -0.82 and 0.6. We obtained medium resolution echel le spectra using the 2.15-m telescope at the argentinian observatory CASLEO. The observations have been performed periodically since 1999. The spectra were calibrated in wavelength and in flux. A definition of the pseudo-continuum level is found for all our observations. We also define a continuum level for calibration purposes. The equivalent width of the D lines is computed in detail for all our spectra and related to the colour index (B-V) of the stars. When possible, we perform a careful comparison with previous studies. Finally, we construct a spectral index (R_D) as the ratio between the flux in the D lines, and the bolometric flux. We find that, once corrected for the photospheric contribution, this index can be used as a chromospheric activity indicator in stars with a high level of activity. Additionally, we find that combining some of our results, we obtain a method to calibrate in flux stars of unknown colour.
