Very recent report [1] on observation of superconductivity in Bi4O4S3 could potentially reignite the search for superconductivity in a broad range of layered sulphides. We report here synthesis of Bi4O4S3 at 5000C by vacuum encapsulation technique an d basic characterizations. Detailed structural, magnetization, and electrical transport results are reported. Bi4O4S3 is contaminated by small amounts of Bi2S3 and Bi impurities. The majority phase is tetragonal I4/mmm space group with lattice parameters a = 3.9697(2){AA}, c = 41.3520(1){AA}. Both AC and DC magnetization measurements confirmed that Bi4O4S3 is a bulk superconductor with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 4.4K. Isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements indicated closed loops with clear signatures of flux pinning and irreversible behavior. The lower critical field (Hc1) at 2K, of the new superconductor is found to be ~39 Oe. The magneto-transport R(T, H) measurements showed a resistive broadening and decrease in Tc (R=0) to lower temperatures with increasing magnetic field. The extrapolated upper critical field Hc2(0) is ~ 310kOe with a corresponding Ginzburg-Landau coherence length of ~100{AA} . In the normal state the {rho} ~ T2 is not indicated. Our magnetization and electrical transport measurements substantiate the appearance of bulk superconductivity in as synthesized Bi4O4S3. On the other hand same temperature heat treated Bi is not superconducting, thus excluding possibility of impurity driven superconductivity in the newly discovered Bi4O4S3 superconductor.
The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline La0.70(Ca0.30-xSrx)MnO3:Ag 10% manganite have been investigated. All the compositions are crystallized in single phase orthorhombic Pbnm space group. Both, the Insulator-Metal transition t emperature (TIM) and Curie temperature (Tc) are observed at 298 K for x = 0.10 composition. Though both TIM and Tc are nearly unchanged with Ag addition, the MR is slightly improved. The MR at 300 K is found to be as large as 31% with magnetic field change of 1Tesla, whereas it reaches up to 49% at magnetic field of 3Tesla for La0.70Ca0.20Sr0.10MnO3:Ag0.10 sample. The maximum entropy change (DeltaSMmax) is 7.6 J.Kg-1.K-1 upon the magnetic field change of 5Tesla, near its Tc (300.5 K). The La0.70Ca0.20Sr0.10MnO3:Ag0.10 sample having good MR (31%1Tesla, 49%3Tesla) and reasonable change in magnetic entropy (7.6 J.Kg-1.K-1, 5 Tesla) at 300 K can be a potential magnetic refrigerant material at ambient temperatures.
We report the experimental and theoretical study on magnetic nature of Bi3Ni system. The structure is found to be orthorhombic (Pnma) with lattice parameters a = 8.879{AA} b = 4.0998{AA} and c = 4.099{AA}. The title compound is synthesized via a soli d state reaction route by quartz vacuum encapsulation of 5N purity stoichiometric ingredients of Ni and Bi. The superconducting transition temperature is found to be 4.1 K as confirmed from magnetization and specific heat measurements. The lower critical field (Hc1) and irreversibility field (Hirr) are around 150 and 3000Oe respectively at 2K. Upper critical field (Hc2) as determined from in field (up to 4 Tesla) ac susceptibility is found to be around 2 Tesla at 2K. The normal state specific heat is fitted using Sommerfeld-Debye equation C(T) = {gamma}T + {beta}T3+{delta}T5 and the parameters obtained are {gamma}= 11.08mJ/mol-K2, {beta}= 3.73mJ/mol-K4 and {delta}= 0.0140mJ/mol-K6. The calculated electronic density of states (DOS) at Fermi level N(EF) and Debye temperature {Theta}D are 4.697 states/eV per formula unit and 127.7K respectively. We also estimated the value of electron phonon coupling constant ({lambda}) to be 1.23, which when substituted in MacMillan equation gives Tc = 4.5K. Density functional (DFT) based calculations for experimentally determined lattice parameters show that Ni in this compound is non-magnetic and ferromagnetic interactions seem to play no role. The Stoner condition I*N(EF) = 0.136 per Ni atom also indicates that system cannot have any ferromagnetism. The fixed spin moment (FSM) calculations by fixing total magnetic moment on the unit cell also suggested that this system does not exhibit any signatures of ferromagnetism.
