We report normal-state transport properties of the single-crystalline samples of the silver-lead oxide superconductor Ag5Pb2O6, including the electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall coefficient. From the Hall coefficient measurement, we confirmed that the carrier density of this oxide is as low as 5x10^{21} cm^{-3}, one order of magnitude smaller than those for ordinary alkali metals and noble metals. The magnetoresistance behavior is well characterized by the axial symmetry of the Fermi surface and by a single relaxation time. The T^2 term of the resistivity is scaled with the specific heat coefficient, based on the recent theory for the electron-electron scattering. The present results provide evidence that Ag5Pb2O6 is a low-carrier-density three-dimensional electron-gas-like system with enhanced electron-electron scatterings.

The crystal structure and numerous normal and superconducting state properties of layered tetragonal (P4/nmm) LaFeAsO, with F-doping of 11 %, are reported. Resistivity measurements give an onset transition temperature Tc = 28.2 K, and low field magnetic susceptibility data indicate bulk superconductivity. In applied magnetic field, analysis of the resistive transition results in a critical field Hc2 = 30 T and a coherence length 35 A. An upper limit for the electron carrier concentration of 1 x 10^21 cm-3 is inferred from Hall data just above Tc. Strong electron-electron correlations are suggested from temperature-dependent resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity data. Anomalies near Tc are observed in both Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity data.
We argue that the magnetic susceptibility data, Refs. 1-3, for the low-density two-dimensional (2D) silicon-based electron gas indicate that magnetically active electrons are localised in spin-droplets. The droplets exist in both the insulating and metallic phases, and interact ferromagnetically, forming an effective 2D Heisenberg ferromagnet. Comparing the data with known analytical and numerical results for a 2D Heisenberg ferromagnet, we determine that JS^2 approx 0.6K, where S is the spin of the droplet and J is the ferromagnetic exchange constant between droplets. We further argue that most likely S=1 with four electrons occupying each droplet on average. We discuss the dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat on the external magnetic field, which follows from the model, and hence we suggest further experimental tests of the model.
High temperature cuprate superconductors consist of stacked CuO2 planes, with primarily two dimensional electronic band structures and magnetic excitations, while superconducting coherence is three dimensional. This dichotomy highlights the importance of out-of-plane charge dynamics, believed to be incoherent in the normal state, yet lacking a comprehensive characterization in energy-momentum space. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) with polarization analysis to uncover the pure charge character of a recently discovered collective mode in electron-doped cuprates. This mode disperses along both the in- and, importantly, out-of-plane directions, revealing its three dimensional nature. The periodicity of the out-of-plane dispersion corresponds to the CuO2 plane distance rather than the crystallographic c-axis lattice constant, suggesting that the interplane Coulomb interaction drives the coherent out-of-plane charge dynamics. The observed properties are hallmarks of the long-sought acoustic plasmon, predicted for layered systems and argued to play a substantial role in mediating high temperature superconductivity.
We investigated the out-of-plane transport properties of parent and chemically substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ for various types of substitution. Based on the studies of Hall coefficient and chemical-substitution effect, we have clarified the origin for the unusual temperature dependence of out-of-plane resistivity $rho_c(T)$ in the high-temperature paramagnetic-tetragonal phase. Electron (hole) carriers have an incoherent (coherent) character, which is responsible for non-metallic (metallic) $rho_c(T)$. Although both of electron and hole contributions are almost comparable, a slightly larger contribution comes from electrons at high temperatures, while from holes at low temperatures, resulting in a maximum in $rho_c(T)$. In the low-temperature antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic phase, the major effect of substitution is to increase the residual-resistivity component, as in the case for the in-plane transport. In particular, Co atoms substituted for Fe give rise to strong scattering with large $mathit{ac}$ anisotropy. We found that K substitution induces a non-metallic behavior in $rho_c(T)$ at low temperatures, which is likely due to a weakly localized nature along the $c$-axis direction.
The pseudogap is a central puzzle of cuprate superconductors. Its connection to the Mott insulator at low doping $p$ remains ambiguous and its relation to the charge order that reconstructs the Fermi surface at intermediate $p$ is still unclear. Here we use measurements of the Hall coefficient in magnetic fields up to 88 T to show that Fermi-surface reconstruction by charge order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ ends sharply at a critical doping $p = 0.16$, distinctly lower than the pseudogap critical point at $p^* = 0.19$. This shows that pseudogap and charge order are separate phenomena. We then find that the change of carrier density from $n = 1 + p$ in the conventional metal at high p to $n = p$ at low $p$ - a signature of the lightly doped cuprates - starts at $p^*$. This shows that pseudogap and antiferromagnetic Mott insulator are linked.
