We show that the symmetry algebra governing the interacting part of the matrix model for M-theory on the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave is the basic classical Lie superalgebra SU(4|2). We determine the SU(4|2) multiplets present in the exact spectrum in the limit where mu (the mass parameter) becomes infinite, and find that these include infinitely many BPS multiplets. Using the representation theory of SU(4|2), we demonstrate that some of these BPS multiplets, including all of the vacuum states of the matrix model plus certain infinite towers of excited states, have energies which are exactly protected non-perturbatively for any value of mu > 0. In the large N limit, these lead to exact quantum states of M-theory on the pp-wave. We also show explicitly that there are certain BPS multiplets which do receive energy corrections by combining with other BPS multiplets to form ordinary multiplets.

Massive tensor multiplets have recently been scrutinized in hep-th/0410051 and hep-th/0410149, as they appear in orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory. Here we formulate several dually equivalent models for massive N = 1, N=2 tensor multiplets in four space-time dimensions. In the N = 2 case, we employ harmonic and projective superspace techniques.
We prove that there is no parity anomaly in M-theory in the low-energy field theory approximation. Our approach is computational. We determine generators for the 12-dimensional bordism group of pin manifolds with a w_1-twisted integer lift of w_4; these are the manifolds on which Wick-rotated M-theory exists. The anomaly cancellation comes down to computing a specific eta-invariant and cubic form on these manifolds. Of interest beyond this specific problem are our expositions of: computational techniques for eta-invariants, the algebraic theory of cubic forms, Adams spectral sequence techniques, and anomalies for spinor fields and Rarita-Schwinger fields.
We present a novel framework for simulating matrix models on a quantum computer. Supersymmetric matrix models have natural applications to superstring/M-theory and gravitational physics, in an appropriate limit of parameters. Furthermore, for certain states in the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, several supersymmetric quantum field theories dual to superstring/M-theory can be realized on a quantum device. Our prescription consists of four steps: regularization of the Hilbert space, adiabatic state preparation, simulation of real-time dynamics, and measurements. Regularization is performed for the BMN matrix model with the introduction of energy cut-off via the truncation in the Fock space. We use the Wan-Kim algorithm for fast digital adiabatic state preparation to prepare the low-energy eigenstates of this model as well as thermofield double state. Then, we provide an explicit construction for simulating real-time dynamics utilizing techniques of block-encoding, qubitization, and quantum signal processing. Lastly, we present a set of measurements and experiments that can be carried out on a quantum computer to further our understanding of superstring/M-theory beyond analytic results.

We study the type IIB superstring in the plane-wave background with Ramond-Ramond flux and formulate it as an exact conformal field theory in operator formalism. One of the characteristic features of the superstring in a consistent background with RR flux, such as the AdS5xS5 and its plane-wave limit, is that the left- and the right-moving degrees of freedom on the worldsheet are inherently coupled. In the plane-wave case, it is manifested in the well-known fact that the Green-Schwarz formulation of the theory reduces to that of free massive bosons and fermions in the light-cone gauge. This raises the obvious question as to how this feature is reconciled with the underlying conformal symmetry of the string theory. By adopting the semi-light-cone conformal gauge, we will show that, despite the existence of such non-linear left-right couplings, one can construct two independent sets of quantum Virasoro operators in terms of fields obeying the free-field commutation relations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the BRST cohomology analysis reproduces the physical spectrum obtained in the light-cone gauge.
