This letter deals with homogenization of a nonlocal model with Levy-type operator of rapidly oscillating coefficients. This nonlocal model describes mean residence time and other escape phenomena for stochastic dynamical systems with non-Gaussian Levy noise. We derive an effective model with a specific convergence rate. This enables efficient analysis and simulation of escape phenomena under non-Gaussian fluctuations.
The focus of our work is dispersive, second-order effective model describing the low-frequency wave motion in heterogeneous (e.g.~functionally-graded) media endowed with periodic microstructure. For this class of quasi-periodic medium variations, we pursue homogenization of the scalar wave equation in $mathbb{R}^d$, $dgeqslant 1$ within the framework of multiple scales expansion. When either $d=1$ or $d=2$, this model problem bears direct relevance to the description of (anti-plane) shear waves in elastic solids. By adopting the lengthscale of microscopic medium fluctuations as the perturbation parameter, we synthesize the germane low-frequency behavior via a fourth-order differential equation (with smoothly varying coefficients) governing the mean wave motion in the medium, where the effect of microscopic heterogeneities is upscaled by way of the so-called cell functions. In an effort to demonstrate the relevance of our analysis toward solving boundary value problems (deemed to be the ultimate goal of most homogenization studies), we also develop effective boundary conditions, up to the second order of asymptotic approximation, applicable to one-dimensional (1D) shear wave motion in a macroscopically heterogeneous solid with periodic microstructure. We illustrate the analysis numerically in 1D by considering (i) low-frequency wave dispersion, (ii) mean-field homogenized description of the shear waves propagating in a finite domain, and (iii) full-field homogenized description thereof. In contrast to (i) where the overall wave dispersion appears to be fairly well described by the leading-order model, the results in (ii) and (iii) demonstrate the critical role that higher-order corrections may have in approximating the actual waveforms in quasi-periodic media.
We show that solutions to Smoluchowskis equation with a constant coagulation kernel and an initial datum with some regularity and exponentially decaying tail converge exponentially fast to a self-similar profile. This convergence holds in a weighted Sobolev norm which implies the L^2 convergence of derivatives up to a certain order k depending on the regularity of the initial condition. We prove these results through the study of the linearized coagulation equation in self-similar variables, for which we show a spectral gap in a scale of weighted Sobolev spaces. We also take advantage of the fact that the Laplace or Fourier transforms of this equation can be explicitly solved in this case.
Let $u^varepsilon$ and $u$ be viscosity solutions of the oscillatory Hamilton-Jacobi equation and its corresponding effective equation. Given bounded, Lipschitz initial data, we present a simple proof to obtain the optimal rate of convergence $mathcal{O}(varepsilon)$ of $u^varepsilon rightarrow u$ as $varepsilon rightarrow 0^+$ for a large class of convex Hamiltonians $H(x,y,p)$ in one dimension. This class includes the Hamiltonians from classical mechanics with separable potential. The proof makes use of optimal control theory and a quantitative version of the ergodic theorem for periodic functions in dimension $n = 1$.
In this paper we consider the homogenization of the evolution problem associated with a jump process that involves three different smooth kernels that govern the jumps to/from different parts of the domain. We assume that the spacial domain is divided into a sequence of two subdomains $A_n cup B_n$ and we have three different smooth kernels, one that controls the jumps from $A_n$ to $A_n$, a second one that controls the jumps from $B_n$ to $B_n$ and the third one that governs the interactions between $A_n$ and $B_n$.Assuming that $chi_{A_n} (x) to X(x)$ weakly in $L^infty$ (and then $chi_{B_n} (x) to 1-X(x)$ weakly in $L^infty$) as $n to infty$ and that the initial condition is given by a density $u_0$ in $L^2$ we show that there is an homogenized limit system in which the three kernels and the limit function $X$ appear. When the initial condition is a delta at one point, $delta_{bar{x}}$ (this corresponds to the process that starts at $bar{x}$) we show that there is convergence along subsequences such that $bar{x} in A_{n_j}$ or $bar{x} in B_{n_j}$ for every $n_j$ large enough. We also provide a probabilistic interpretation of this evolution equation in terms of a stochastic process that describes the movement of a particle that jumps in $Omega$ according to the three different kernels and show that the underlying process converges in distribution to a limit process associated with the limit equation. We focus our analysis in Neumann type boundary conditions and briefly describe at the end how to deal with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
We study the asymptotic behavior of solution of semi-linear PDEs. Neither periodicity nor ergodicity will be assumed. In return, we assume that the coefficients admit a limit in `{C}esaro sense. In such a case, the averaged coefficients could be discontinuous. We use probabilistic approach based on weak convergence for the associated backward stochastic differential equation in the S-topology to derive the averaged PDE. However, since the averaged coefficients are discontinuous, the classical viscosity solution is not defined for the averaged PDE. We then use the notion of $L^p-$viscosity solution introduced in cite{CCKS}. We use BSDEs techniques to establish the existence of $L^p-$viscosity solution for the averaged PDE. We establish weak continuity for the flow of the limit diffusion process and related the PDE limit to the backward stochastic differential equation via the representation of $L^p$-viscosity solution.
