The proliferation of wireless devices in recent years has caused a spectrum shortage, which led the scientific community to explore the potential of using terahertz (THz) communications. However, THz systems suffer from severe path attenuation, blockage, and antenna misalignment. In this paper, we present a relay-based blockage and antenna misalignment mitigation approach. In more detail, two relay selection policies are employed, namely best and random relay selection. The system performance under both policies is evaluated and compared in terms of average throughput and the probability that throughput of a link is below the quality of service (QoS) threshold, using Monte Carlo simulations. It was observed that the effect of both blockage and misalignment can be mitigated using relays. Moreover, the gain of using relaying to mitigate blockage is much more significant.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a cost- and energy-efficient technology that can customize and program the physical propagation environment by reflecting radio waves in preferred directions. However, the purely passive reflection of RISs not only limits the end-to-end channel beamforming gains, but also hinders the acquisition of accurate channel state information for the phase control at RISs. In this paper, we provide an overview of a hybrid relay-reflecting intelligent surface (HR-RIS) architecture, in which only a few elements are active and connected to power amplifiers and radio frequency chains. The introduction of a small number of active elements enables a remarkable system performance improvement which can also compensate for losses due to hardware impairments such as the deployment of limited-resolution phase shifters. Particularly, the active processing facilitates efficient channel estimation and localization at HR-RISs. We present two practical architectures for HR-RISs, namely, fixed and dynamic HR-RISs, and discuss their applications to beamforming, channel estimation, and localization. The benefits, key challenges, and future research directions for HR-RIS-aided communications are also highlighted. Numerical results for an exemplary deployment scenario show that HR-RISs with only four active elements can attain up to 42.8 percent and 41.8 percent improvement in spectral efficiency and energy efficiency, respectively, compared with conventional RISs.
We consider adversarial machine learning based attacks on power allocation where the base station (BS) allocates its transmit power to multiple orthogonal subcarriers by using a deep neural network (DNN) to serve multiple user equipments (UEs). The DNN that corresponds to a regression model is trained with channel gains as the input and allocated transmit powers as the output. While the BS allocates the transmit power to the UEs to maximize rates for all UEs, there is an adversary that aims to minimize these rates. The adversary may be an external transmitter that aims to manipulate the inputs to the DNN by interfering with the pilot signals that are transmitted to measure the channel gain. Alternatively, the adversary may be a rogue UE that transmits fabricated channel estimates to the BS. In both cases, the adversary carefully crafts adversarial perturbations to manipulate the inputs to the DNN of the BS subject to an upper bound on the strengths of these perturbations. We consider the attacks targeted on a single UE or all UEs. We compare these attacks with a benchmark, where the adversary scales down the input to the DNN. We show that adversarial attacks are much more effective than the benchmark attack in terms of reducing the rate of communications. We also show that adversarial attacks are robust to the uncertainty at the adversary including the erroneous knowledge of channel gains and the potential errors in exercising the attacks exactly as specified.

Mobility and blockage are two critical challenges in wireless transmission over millimeter-wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) bands. In this paper, we investigate network massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission for mmWave/THz downlink in the presence of mobility and blockage. Considering the mmWave/THz propagation characteristics, we first propose to apply per-beam synchronization for network massive MIMO to mitigate the channel Doppler and delay dispersion effects. Accordingly, we establish a transmission model. We then investigate network massive MIMO downlink transmission strategies with only the statistical channel state information (CSI) available at the base stations (BSs), formulating the strategy design problem as an optimization problem to maximize the network sum-rate. We show that the beam domain is favorable to perform transmission, and demonstrate that BSs can work individually when sending signals to user terminals. Based on these insights, the network massive MIMO precoding design is reduced to a network sum-rate maximization problem with respect to beam domain power allocation. By exploiting the sequential optimization method and random matrix theory, an iterative algorithm with guaranteed convergence performance is further proposed for beam domain power allocation. Numerical results reveal that the proposed network massive MIMO transmission approach with the statistical CSI can effectively alleviate the blockage effects and provide mobility enhancement over mmWave and THz bands.
The use of millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum for commercial wireless communications is expected to offer data rates in the order of Gigabits-per-second, thus able to support future applications such as Vehicle-to-Vehicle or Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communication. However, especially in urban settings, mmWave signal propagation is sensitive to blockage by surrounding objects, resulting in significant signal attenuation. One approach to mitigate the effect of attenuation is through multi-hop communication with the help of relays. Leveraging the unique characteristics of the mmWave medium, we consider a single-source/destination $2$-hop system, where a cluster of spatially distributed and reconfigurable relays is used to cooperatively amplify-and-forward the source signal to the destination. Our system evolves in time slots, during which not only are optimal beamforming weights centrally determined, but also future relay positions for the subsequent time slot are optimally selected, jointly maximizing the expected signal-to-interference+noise ratio at the destination. Optimal predictive relay positioning is achieved by formulating a 2-stage stochastic programming problem, which is efficiently approximated via a conditional sample-average-approximation surrogate, and solved in a purely distributed fashion across relays. The efficacy of the proposed near-optimal positioning policy is corroborated by comparison against a randomized relay positioning policy, clearly confirming its superiority.
Broadband access is key to ensuring robust economic development and improving quality of life. Unfortunately, the communication infrastructure deployed in rural areas throughout the world lags behind its urban counterparts due to low population density and economics. This article examines the motivations and challenges of providing broadband access over vast rural regions, with an emphasis on the wireless aspect in view of its irreplaceable role in closing the digital gap. Applications and opportunities for future rural wireless communications are discussed for a variety of areas, including residential welfare, digital agriculture, and transportation. This article also comprehensively investigates current and emerging wireless technologies that could facilitate rural deployment. Although there is no simple solution, there is an urgent need for researchers to work on coverage, cost, and reliability of rural wireless access.
