Optical activity is ubiquitous across natural and artificial media and is conventionally understood in terms of scattering from electric and magnetic moments. Here we demonstrate experimentally and confirm numerically a type of optical activity that cannot be attributed to electric and magnetic multipoles. We show that our observations can only be accounted for by the inclusion of the toroidal dipole moment, the first term of the recently established peculiar family of toroidal multipoles.

We introduce a chiral metamaterial with strong, non-resonant optical activity, and very low polarization ellipticity. We achieve this by combining a meta-atom and its complementary structure into a meta-molecule, resulting in the coupling of magnetic and electric dipole responses. In contrast to either a pair of crosses, or complementary crosses, this structure has low dispersion in the optical activity at the transmission resonance. We also study the excitation mechanism in this structure, and optimize the optical activity through changing the twist angle.
We demonstrate that the toroidal dipolar response can be realized in the optical regime by designing a feasible nanostructured metamaterial, comprising asymmetric double-bar magnetic resonators assembled into a toroid-like configuration. It is confirmed numerically that an optical toroidal dipolar moment dominates over other moments. This response is characterized by a strong confinement of an E-field component at the toroid center, oriented perpendicular to the H-vortex plane. The resonance-enhanced optical toroidal response can provide an experimental avenue for various interesting optical phenomena associated with the elusive toroidal moment.
We study theoretically and experimentally a novel type of metamaterial with hybrid elements composed of twisted pairs of cross-shaped meta-atoms and their complements. We reveal that such two-layer metasurfaces demonstrate large, dispersionless optical activity at the transmission resonance accompanied by very low ellipticity. We develop a retrieval procedure to determine the effective material parameters for this structure, which has lower-order symmetry ($mathrm {C}_4$) than other commonly studied chiral structures. We verify our new theoretical approach by reproducing numerical and experimental scattering parameters.

Toroidal vortices are whirling disturbances rotating about a ring-shaped core while advancing in the direction normal to the ring orifice. Toroidal vortices are commonly found in nature and being studied in a wide range of disciplines. Here we report the experimental observation of photonic toroidal vortex as a new solution to Maxwells equations with the use of conformal mapping. The helical phase twists around a closed loop leading to an azimuthal local orbital angular momentum density. The preparation of such intriguing light field may offer insights of extending toroidal vortex to other disciplines and find important applications in light-matter interaction, optical manipulation, photonic symmetry and topology, and quantum information.
Light interacts differently with left and right handed three dimensional chiral objects, like helices, and this leads to the phenomenon known as optical activity. Here, by applying a polarization tomography, we show experimentally, for the first time in the visible domain, that chirality has a different optical manifestation for twisted planar nanostructured metallic objects acting as isolated chiral metaobjects. Our analysis demonstrate how surface plasmons, which are lossy bidimensional electromagnetic waves propagating on top of the structure, can delocalize light information in the just precise way for giving rise to this subtle effect.
