The multiferroic properties of EuTiO3 are greatly enhanced when a sample is strained, signifying that coupling between strain and structural, magnetic or ferroelectric order parameters is extremely important. Here resonant ultrasound spectroscopy has been used to investigate strain coupling effects, as well as possible additional phase transitions, through their influence on elastic and anelastic relaxations that occur as a function of temperature between 2 and 300 K and with applied magnetic field up to 14 T. Antiferromagnetic ordering is accompanied by acoustic loss and softening, and a weak magnetoelastic effect is also associated with the change in magnetization direction below ~2.8 K. Changes in loss due to the influence of magnetic field suggest the existence of magnetic defects which couple with strain and may play a role in pinning of ferroelastic twin walls.

X-ray diffraction, dynamical mechanical analysis and infrared reflectivity studies revealed an antiferrodistortive phase transition in EuTiO3 ceramics. Near 300K the perovskite structure changes from cubic Pm-3m to tetragonal I4/mcm due to antiphase tilting of oxygen octahedra along the c axis (a0a0c- in Glazer notation). The phase transition is analogous to SrTiO3. However, some ceramics as well as single crystals of EuTiO3 show different infrared reflectivity spectra bringing evidence of a different crystal structure. In such samples electron diffraction revealed an incommensurate tetragonal structure with modulation wavevector q ~ 0.38 a*. Extra phonons in samples with modulated structure are activated in the IR spectra due to folding of the Brillouin zone. We propose that defects like Eu3+ and oxygen vacancies strongly influence the temperature of the phase transition to antiferrodistortive phase as well as the tendency to incommensurate modulation in EuTiO3.
We have elucidated the spin, lattice, charge and orbital coupling mechanism underlying the multiferroic character in tensile strained EuTiO3 films. Symmetry determined by oxygen octahedral tilting shapes the hybridization between the Eu 4f and Ti 3d orbitals and this inhibits predicted Ti displacement proper ferroelectricity. Instead, phonon softening emerges at low temperatures within the pseudo-cube (110) plane, orthogonal to the anticipated ferroelectric polarization symmetry. Additionally, the magnetic anisotropy is determined by orbital distortion through hybridization between the Ti 3d and typically isotropic Eu2+ 4f. This unique scenario demonstrates the critical role symmetry plays in the coupling of order parameters defining multiferroic behaviour.
We use combine high resolution neutron diffraction (HRPD) with density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the exchange striction at the Curie temperature (TC) of Fe2P and to examine the effect of boron and carbon doping on the P site. We find a significant contraction of the basal plane on heating through TC with a simultaneous increase of the c-axis that results in a small overall volume change of ~0.01%. At the magnetic transition the FeI-FeI distance drops significantly and becomes shorter than FeI-FeII . The shortest metal-metalloid (FeI-PI) distance also decreases sharply. Our DFT model reveals the importance of the latter as this structural change causes a redistribution of the FeI moment along the c-axis (Fe-P chain). We are able to understand the site preference of the dopants, the effect of which can be linked to the increased moment on the FeI-site, brought about by strong magneto-elasticity and changes in the electronic band structure.

We have investigated the magnetocaloric effect in single and polycrystalline samples of quantum paraelectric EuTiO3 by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Single crystalline EuTiO3 shows antiferromagnetic ordering due to Eu2+ magnetic moments below TN = 5.6 K. This compound shows a giant magnetocaloric effect around its Neel temperature. The isothermal magnetic entropy change is 49 Jkg-1K-1, the adiabatic temperature change is 21 K and the refrigeration capacity is 500 JKg-1 for a field change of 7 T at TN. The single crystal and polycrystalline samples show similar values of the magnetic entropy change and adiabatic temperature changes. The large magnetocaloric effect is due to suppression of the spin entropy associated with localized 4f moment of Eu2+ ions. The giant magnetocaloric effect together with negligible hysteresis, suggest that EuTiO3 could be a potential material for magnetic refrigeration below 20 K.

Analytical expressions for the magnetoelastic anisotropy constants of cubic magnetic systems are derived for rectangular and oblique distortions originating from epitaxial growth on substrates with lower crystal symmetry. In particular, the temperature variation of the magnetic properties of magnetic films grown on barium titanate (BaTiO3) substrates are explained in terms of strain-induced magnetic anisotropies caused by the temperature dependent phase transitions of BaTiO3. Our results quantify the experimental observations in ferromagnet/bto-based structures, which have been proposed as templates for magnetoelectric composite heterostructures.
