A preliminary VLT-UVES spectrum of NGC 6302 (Casassus et al. 2002, MN), which hosts one of the hottest PN nuclei known (Teff ~ 220000 K; Wright et al. 2011, MN), has been recently analysed by means of X-SSN, a spectrum synthesis code for nebulae (Morisset and Pequignot). Permitted recombination lines from highly-ionized species are detected/identified for the first time in a PN, and some of them probably for the first time in (Astro)Physics. The need for a homogeneous, high signal-to-noise UVES spectrum for NGC 6302 is advocated.

The exceptional resolution of UVES has allowed the detection of weak spectral features and the separation of components in blended lines. The intensities of all of the OIII fluorescence lines produced by the O1, O3 and other channels, including the 5592 Angstrom charge-exchange line, have been measured and their ratios compared with models.

We present a catalog of high-velocity CIV $lambda$ 1548,1551 mini-Broad Absorption Lines (mini-BALs) in the archives of the VLT-UVES and Keck-HIRES spectrographs. We identify high-velocity CIV mini-BALs based on smooth rounded BAL-like profiles with velocity blueshifts $<$ $-$4000 km/s and widths in the range 70 $lesssim$ FWHM(1548) $lesssim$ 2000 km/s (for $lambda$1548 alone). We find 105 mini-BALs in 44 quasars from a total sample of 638 quasars. The fraction of quasars with at least one mini-BAL meeting our criteria is roughly $sim9$% after correcting for incomplete velocity coverage. However, the numbers of systems rise sharply at lower velocities and narrower FWHMs, suggesting that many outflow lines are missed by our study. All of the systems are highly ionized based on the strong presence of NV and OVI and/or the absence of SiII and CII when within the wavelength coverage. Two of the mini-BAL systems in our catalog, plus three others at smaller velocity shifts, have PV $lambda$1118,1128 absorption indicating highly saturated CIV absorption and total hydrogen column densities $gtrsim 10^{22}$ cm$^{-3}$. Most of the mini-BALs are confirmed to have optical depths $gtrsim$1 with partial covering of the quasar continuum source. The covering fractions are as small as 0.06 in CIV and 0.03 in SiIV , corresponding to outflow absorbing structures $<0.002$ pc across. When multiple lines are measured, the lines of less abundant ions tend to have narrower profiles and smaller covering fractions indicative of inhomogeneous absorbers where higher column densities occur in smaller clumps. This picture might extend to BAL outflows if the broader and generally deeper BALs form in either the largest clumps or collections of many mini-BAL-like clumps that blend together in observed quasar spectra.
We analyse the properties of MgII absorption systems detected along the sightlines toward GRBs using a sample of 10 GRB afterglow spectra obtained with VLT-UVES over the past six years. The S/N ratio is sufficiently high that we can extend previous studies to smaller equivalent widths (typically Wr>0.3A). Over a pathlength of Delta(z)~14 the number of weak absorbers detected is similar along GRB and QSO lines of sight, while the number of strong systems is larger along GRB lines of sight with a 2-sigma significance. Using intermediate and low resolution observations reported in the literature, we increase the absorption length for strong systems to Delta(z)=31.5 (about twice the path length of previous studies) and find that the number density of strong MgII systems is a factor of 2.1+/-0.6 higher (about 3-sigma significance) toward GRBs as compared to QSOs, about twice smaller however than previously reported. We divide the sample in three redshift bins and we find that the number density of strong MgII is larger in the low redshift bins. We investigate in detail the properties of strong MgII systems observed with UVES. Both the estimated dust extinction in strong GRB MgII systems and the equivalent width distribution are consistent with what is observed for standard QSO systems. We find also that the number density of (sub)-DLAs per unit redshift in the UVES sample is probably twice larger than what is expected from QSO sightlines which confirms the peculiarity of GRB lines of sight. These results indicate that neither a dust extinction bias nor different beam sizes of the sources are viable explanations for the excess. It is still possible that the current sample of GRB lines of sight is biased by a subtle gravitational lensing effect. More data and larger samples are needed to test this hypothesis. (abridged)
The ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY) took high-resolution spectra of more than 1000 white dwarfs and pre-white dwarfs. About two thirds of the stars observed are hydrogen-dominated DA white dwarfs. Here we present a catalog and detailed spectroscopic analysis of the DA stars in the SPY. Atmospheric parameters effective temperature and surface gravity are determined for normal DAs. Double-degenerate binaries, DAs with magnetic fields or dM companions, are classified and discussed. The spectra are compared with theoretical model atmospheres using a chi^2 fitting technique. Our final sample contains 615 DAs, which show only hydrogen features in their spectra, although some are double-degenerate binaries. 187 are new detections or classifications. We also find 10 magnetic DAs (4 new) and 46 DA+dM pairs (10 new).
The mechanism behind the shaping of bipolar planetary nebulae is still poorly understood. Accurately tracing the molecule-rich equatorial regions of post-AGB stars can give valuable insight into the ejection mechanisms at work. We investigate the physical conditions, structure and velocity field of the dense molecular region of the planetary nebula NGC 6302 by means of ALMA band 7 interferometric maps. The high spatial resolution of the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO J=3-2 ALMA data allows for an analysis of the geometry of the ejecta in unprecedented detail. We built a spatio-kinematical model of the molecular region with the software SHAPE and performed detailed non-LTE calculations of excitation and radiative transfer with the SHAPEMOL plug-in. We find that the molecular region consists of a massive ring out of which a system of fragments of lobe walls emerge and enclose the base of the lobes visible in the optical. The general properties of this region are in agreement with previous works, although the much greater spatial resolution of the data allows for a very detailed description. We confirm that the mass of the molecular region is 0.1 M$_{odot}$. Additionally, we report a previously undetected component at the nebular equator, an inner, younger ring inclined $sim$60$^circ$ with respect to the main ring, showing a characteristic radius of 7.5$times$10$^{16}$ cm, a mass of 2.7$times$10$^{-3}$ M$_{odot}$, and a counterpart in optical images of the nebula. This inner ring has the same kinematical age as the northwest optical lobes, implying it was ejected approximately at the same time, hundreds of years after the ejection of the bulk of the molecular ring-like region. We discuss a sequence of events leading to the formation of the molecular and optical nebulae, and briefly speculate on the origin of this intriguing inner ring.
