Cross sections from low-energy neutron-nucleus scattering have been evaluated using a coupled channel theory of scattering. Both a coordinate-space and a momentum-space formalism of that coupled-channel theory are considered.A simple rotational model of the channel interaction potentials is used to find results using two relevant codes, ECIS97 and MCAS, so that they may be compared. The very same model is then used in the MCAS approach to quantify the changes that occur when allowance is made for effects of the Pauli principle.

The formalism that describes radiative-capture reactions at low energies within an extended two-cluster potential model is presented. Construction of the operator of single-photon emission is based on a generalisation of the Siegert theorem with which the amplitude of the electromagnetic process is constructed in an explicitly gauge-independent way. While the starting point for this construction is a microscopic (single-nucleon) current model, the resulting operator of low-energy photon emission by a two-cluster system is expressed in terms of macroscopic quantities for the clusters and does not depend directly on their intrinsic coordinates and momenta. The multichannel algebraic scattering (MCAS) approach has been used to construct the initial- and final-state wave functions. We present a general expression for the scattering wave function obtained from the MCAS T matrix taking into account inelastic channels and Coulomb distortion. The developed formalism has been tested on the 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be reaction cross section at astrophysical energies. The energy dependence of the evaluated cross section and S factor agrees well with that extracted from measurement though the calculated quantities slightly overestimate data.
In the present work we take the non relativistic limit of relativistic models and compare the obtained functionals with the usual Skyrme parametrization. Relativistic models with both constant couplings and with density dependent couplings are considered. While some models present very good results already at the lowest order in the density, models with non-linear terms only reproduce the energy functional if higher order terms are taken into account in the expansion.

We demonstrate a new approach to the analysis of extensive multi-energy data. For the case of d + He-4, we produce a phase shift analysis covering for the energy range 3 to 11 MeV. The key idea is the use of iterative perturbative data-to-potential inversion which can produce potentials which reproduce the data simultaneously over a range of energies. It thus effectively regularizes the extraction of phase shifts from diverse, incomplete and possibly somewhat contradictory data sets. In doing so, it will provide guidance to experimentalists as to what further measurements should be made. This study is limited to vector spin observables and spin-orbit interactions. We discuss alternative ways in which the theory can be implemented and which provide insight into the ambiguity problems. We compare the extrapolation of these solutions to other energies. Majorana terms are presented for each potential component.

We employ a collective vibration coupled-channel model to describe the nucleon-16O cluster systems, obtaining low-excitation spectra for 17O and 17F. Bound and resonance states of the compound systems have been deduced, showing good agreement with experimental spectra. Low energy scattering cross sections of neutrons and protons from 16O also have been calculated and the results compare well with available experimental data.

The effects of components in an assumed model interaction potential, as well as of the order to which its deformation is taken, upon resonances in the low-energy cross sections and upon sub-threshold bound states of the compound nucleus (${}^{13}$C) are discussed.
