The effect of vacuum fluctuations on the in-medium hadronic properties is investigated using a chiral SU(3) model in the nonlinear realization. The effect of the baryon Dirac sea is seen to modify hadronic properties and in contrast to a calculation in mean field approximation it is seen to give rise to a significant drop of the vector meson masses in hot and dense matter. This effect is taken into account through the summation of baryonic tadpole diagrams in the relativistic Hartree approximation (RHA), where the baryon self energy is modified due to interactions with both the non-strange $(sigma)$ and the strange $(zeta)$ scalar fields.

We examine flavor SU(3) breaking effects on meson-baryon scattering amplitudes in the chiral unitary model. It turns out that the SU(3) breaking, which appears in the leading quark mass term in the chiral expansion, can not explain the channel dependence of the subtraction parameters of the model, which are crucial to reproduce the observed scattering amplitudes and resonance properties.
The equations of state for neutron matter, strange and non-strange hadronic matter in a chiral SU(3) quark mean field model are applied in the study of slowly rotating neutron stars and hadronic stars. The radius, mass, moment of inertia, and other physical quantities are carefully examined. The effect of nucleon crust for the strange hadronic star is exhibited. Our results show the rotation can increase the maximum mass of compact stars significantly. For big enough mass of pulsar which can not be explained as strange hadronic star, the theoretical approaches to increase the maximum mass are addressed.
Microscopic transport approaches are the tool to describe the non-equilibrium evolution in low energy collisions as well as in the late dilute stages of high-energy collisions. Here, a newly developed hadronic transport approach, SMASH (Simulating Many Accelerated Strongly-interacting Hadrons) is introduced. The overall bulk dynamics in low energy heavy ion collisions is shown including the excitation function of elliptic flow employing several equations of state. The implications of this new approach for dilepton production are discussed and preliminary results for afterburner calculations at the highest RHIC energy are presented and compared to previous UrQMD results. A detailed understanding of a hadron gas with vacuum properties is required to establish the baseline for the exploration of the transition to the quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions at high net baryon densities.
Treating the strange quark mass as a heavy scale compared to the light quark mass, we perform a matching of the nucleon mass in the SU(3) sector to the two-flavor case in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. The validity of the $19$ low-energy constants appearing in the octet baryon masses up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order~cite{Ren:2014vea} is supported by comparing the effective parameters (the combinations of the $19$ couplings) with the corresponding low-energy constants in the SU(2) sector~cite{Alvarez-Ruso:2013fza}. In addition, it is shown that the dependence of the effective parameters and the pion-nucleon sigma term on the strange quark mass is relatively weak around its physical value, thus providing support to the assumption made in Ref.~cite{Alvarez-Ruso:2013fza}.

We study baryon-baryon scattering by applying time-ordered perturbation theory to the manifestly Lorentz-invariant formulation of SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory. We derive the corresponding diagrammatic rules paying special attention to complications caused by momentum-dependent interactions and propagators of particles with non-zero spin. We define the effective potential as a sum of two-baryon irreducible contributions of time-ordered diagrams and derive a system of integral equations for the scattering amplitude, which provides a coupled-channel generalization of the Kadyshevsky equation. The obtained leading-order baryon-baryon potentials are perturbatively renormalizable, and the corresponding integral equations have unique solutions in all partial waves. We discuss the issue of additional finite subtractions required to improve the ultraviolet convergence of (finite) loop integrals on the example of nucleon-nucleon scattering in the $^3P_0$ partial wave. Assuming that corrections beyond leading order can be treated perturbatively, we obtain a fully renormalizable formalism which can be employed to study baryon-baryon scattering.
