We suggest that random matrix theory applied to a classical action matrix can be used in classical physics to distinguish chaotic from non-chaotic behavior. We consider the 2-D stadium billiard system as well as the 2-D anharmonic and harmonic oscillator. By unfolding of the spectrum of such matrix we compute the level spacing distribution, the spectral auto-correlation and spectral rigidity. We observe Poissonian behavior in the integrable case and Wignerian behavior in the chaotic case. We present numerical evidence that the action matrix of the stadium billiard displays GOE behavior and give an explanation for it. The findings present evidence for universality of level fluctuations - known from quantum chaos - also to hold in classical physics.

Chaotic systems exhibit rich quantum dynamical behaviors ranging from dynamical localization to normal diffusion to ballistic motion. Dynamical localization and normal diffusion simulate electron motion in an impure crystal with a vanishing and finite conductivity, i.e., an Anderson insulator and a metal, respectively. Ballistic motion simulates a perfect crystal with diverging conductivity, i.e., a supermetal. We analytically find and numerically confirm that, for a large class of chaotic systems, the metal-supermetal dynamics crossover occurs and is universal, determined only by the systems symmetry. Furthermore, we show that the universality of this dynamics crossover is identical to that of eigenfunction and spectral fluctuations described by the random matrix theory.
The relation between the onset of chaos and critical phenomena, like Quantum Phase Transitions (QPT) and Excited-State Quantum Phase transitions (ESQPT), is analyzed for atom-field systems. While it has been speculated that the onset of hard chaos is associated with ESQPT based in the resonant case, the off-resonant cases show clearly that both phenomena, ESQPT and chaos, respond to different mechanisms. The results are supported in a detailed numerical study of the dynamics of the semiclassical Hamiltonian of the Dicke model. The appearance of chaos is quantified calculating the largest Lyapunov exponent for a wide sample of initial conditions in the whole available phase space for a given energy. The percentage of the available phase space with chaotic trajectories is evaluated as a function of energy and coupling between the qubit and bosonic part, allowing to obtain maps in the space of coupling and energy, where ergodic properties are observed in the model. Different sets of Hamiltonian parameters are considered, including resonant and off-resonant cases.

The spectral fluctuations of quantum (or wave) systems with a chaotic classical (or ray) limit are mostly universal and faithful to random-matrix theory. Taking up ideas of Pechukas and Yukawa we show that equilibrium statistical mechanics for the fictitious gas of particles associated with the parametric motion of levels yields spectral fluctuations of the random-matrix type. Previously known clues to that goal are an appropriate equilibrium ensemble and a certain ergodicity of level dynamics. We here complete the reasoning by establishing a power law for the $hbar$ dependence of the mean parametric separation of avoided level crossings. Due to that law universal spectral fluctuations emerge as average behavior of a family of quantum dynamics drawn from a control parameter interval which becomes vanishingly small in the classical limit; the family thus corresponds to a single classical system. We also argue that classically integrable dynamics cannot produce universal spectral fluctuations since their level dynamics resembles a nearly ideal Pechukas-Yukawa gas.
We numerically investigate the dynamics of an one-dimensional disordered lattice using the Hertzian model, describing a granular chain, and the $alpha+beta $ Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou model (FPUT). The most profound difference between the two systems is the discontinuous nonlinearity of the granular chain appearing whenever neighboring particles are detached. We therefore sought to unravel the role of these discontinuities in the destruction of Anderson localization and their influence on the systems chaotic dynamics. Our results show that both models exhibit an energy range where localization coexists with chaos. However, the discontinuous nonlinearity is found to be capable of triggering energy spreading of initially localized modes, at lower energies than the FPUT model. A transition from Anderson localization to chaotic dynamics and energy equipartition is found for the granular chain and is associated with thepropagation of the discontinuous nonlinearity in the chain. On the contrary, the FPUT chain exhibits an alternate behavior between localized and delocalized chaotic behavior which is strongly dependent on the initial energy of excitation.

We show that the spacing distributions of rational rhombus billiards fall in a family of universality classes distinctly different from the Wigner-Dyson family of random matrix theory and the Poisson distribution. Some of the distributions find explanation in a recent work of Bogomolny, Gerland and Schmit. For the irrational billiards, despite ergodicity, we get the same distributions for the examples considered - once again, distinct from the Wigner-Dyson distributions. All results are obtained numerically by a method that allows us to reach very high energies.
