High-mobility 2D electron systems in a perpendicular magnetic field exhibit zero resistance states (ZRS) when driven with microwave radiation. We study the nonequilibrium phase transition into this ZRS using phenomenological equations of motion to describe the current and density fluctuations. We focus on two models for the transition into a time-independent steady state. Model-I assumes rotational invariance, density conservation, and symmetry under shifting the density globally by a constant. This model is argued to describe physics on small length scales where the density does not vary appreciably from its mean. The ordered state that arises in this case breaks rotational invariance and consists of a uniform current and transverse Hall field. We discuss some properties of this state, such as stability to fluctuations and the appearance of a Goldstone mode associated with the continuous symmetry breaking. Using dynamical renormalization group techniques, we find that with short-range interactions this model can admit a continuous transition described by mean-field theory, whereas with long-range interactions the transition is driven first-order. Model-II, which assumes only rotational invariance and density conservation and is argued to be appropriate on longer length scales, is shown to predict a first-order transition with either short- or long-range interactions. We discuss implications for experiments, including scaling relations and a possible way to detect the Goldstone mode in the case of a continuous transition into the ZRS, as well as possible signatures of a first-order transition in larger samples. We also point out the connection of our work to the well-studied phenomenon of `flocking.

Using the method developed in a recent paper (Euro. Phys. J. B 92.8 (2019): 1-28) we consider $1/f$ noise in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The electron coherence length of the system is considered as a basic parameter for discretizing the space, inside which the dynamics of electrons is described by quantum mechanics, while for length scales much larger than it the dynamics is semi-classical. For our model, which is based on the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac approximation, there are two control parameters: temperature $T$ and the disorder strength ($Delta$). Our Monte Carlo studies show that the system exhibits $1/f$ noise related to the electronic avalanche size, which can serve as a model for describing the experimentally observed flicker noise in 2DEG. The power spectrum of our model scales with frequency with an exponent in the interval $0.3<alpha_{PS}<0.6$. We numerically show that the electronic avalanches are scale-invariant with power-law behaviors in and out of the metal-insulator transition line.
To study the influence of microwave irradiation on two-dimensional electrons, we apply a method based on capacitance measurements in GaAs quantum well samples where the gate covers a central part of the layer. We find that the capacitance oscillations at high magnetic fields, caused by the oscillations of thermodynamic density of states, are not essentially modified by microwaves. However, in the region of fields below 1 Tesla, we observe another set of oscillation, with the period and the phase identical to those of microwave induced resistance oscillations. The phenomenon of microwave induced capacitance oscillations is explained in terms of violation of the Einstein relation between conductivity and the diffusion coefficient in the presence of microwaves, which leads to a dependence of the capacitor charging on the anomalous conductivity. We also observe microwave-induced oscillations in the capacitive response to periodic variations of external heating. These oscillations appear due to the thermoelectric effect and are in antiphase with microwave induced resistance oscillations because of the Corbino-like geometry of our experimental setup.

Effects of the spin-orbit interactions on the energy spectrum, Fermi surface and spin dynamics are studied in structural- and bulk-inversion asymmetric quasi-two-dimensional structures with a finite thickness in the presence of a parabolic transverse confining potential. One-particle quantum mechanical problem in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field is solved numerically exact. Interplay of the spin-orbit interactions, orbital- and Zeeman-effects of the in-plane magnetic field yields a multi-valley subband structure, typical for realization of the Gunn effect. A possible Gunn-effect-mediated spin accumulation is discussed.
A metal-insulator transition in two-dimensional electron gases at B=0 is found in Ga(Al)As heterostructures, where a high density of self-assembled InAs quantum dots is incorporated just 3 nm below the heterointerface. The transition occurs at resistances around h/e^2 and critical carrier densities of 1.2 10^11cm^-2. Effects of electron-electron interactions are expected to be rather weak in our samples, while disorder plays a crucial role.
The frequency dependence of microwave-induced resistance oscillations (MIROs) has been studied experimentally in high-mobility electron GaAs/AlGaAs structures to explore the limits at which these oscillations can be observed. It is found that in dc transport experiments at frequencies above 120 GHz, MIROs start to quench, while above 230 GHz, they completely disappear. The results will need to be understood theoretically but are qualitatively discussed within a model in which forced electronic charge oscillations (plasmons) play an intermediate role in the interaction process between the radiation and the single-particle electron excitations between Landau levels.
