We address the question of how participants in a small world experiment are able to find short paths in a social network using only local information about their immediate contacts. We simulate such experiments on a network of actual email contacts within an organization as well as on a student social networking website. On the email network we find that small world search strategies using a contacts position in physical space or in an organizational hierarchy relative to the target can effectively be used to locate most individuals. However, we find that in the online student network, where the data is incomplete and hierarchical structures are not well defined, local search strategies are less effective. We compare our findings to recent theoretical hypotheses about underlying social structure that would enable these simple search strategies to succeed and discuss the implications to social software design.
The one-mode projecting is extensively used to compress the bipartite networks. Since the one-mode projection is always less informative than the bipartite representation, a proper weighting method is required to better retain the original information. In this article, inspired by the network-based resource-allocation dynamics, we raise a weighting method, which can be directly applied in extracting the hidden information of networks, with remarkably better performance than the widely used global ranking method as well as collaborative filtering. This work not only provides a creditable method in compressing bipartite networks, but also highlights a possible way for the better solution of a long-standing challenge in modern information science: How to do personal recommendation?
In this paper, we report our progress towards the realization of a continuous guided atomic beam in the degenerate regime. So far, we have coupled into a magnetic guide a flux of a few $10^{8}$ atoms/s at 60 cm/s with a propagation in the guide over more than 2 meters. At this stage, the collision rate is not high enough to start an efficient forced evaporative cooling. Here we describe a new approach to reach the collisional regime. It is based on a pulsed feeding of the magnetic guide at a high repetition rate. The overlap of the packets of atoms occurs in the guide and leads to a continuous guided beam. We discuss different ways to increase the collision rate of this beam while keeping the phase space density constant by shaping the external potential.
This survey presents the main results achieved for the influence maximization problem in social networks. This problem is well studied in the literature and, thanks to its recent applications, some of which currently deployed on the field, it is receiving more and more attention in the scientific community. The problem can be formulated as follows: given a graph, with each node having a certain probability of influencing its neighbors, select a subset of vertices so that the number of nodes in the network that are influenced is maximized. Starting from this model, we introduce the main theoretical developments and computational results that have been achieved, taking into account different diffusion models describing how the information spreads throughout the network, various ways in which the sources of information could be placed, and how to tackle the problem in the presence of uncertainties affecting the network. Finally, we present one of the main application that has been developed and deployed exploiting tools and techniques previously discussed.
A patient-centric approach to healthcare leads to an informal social network among medical professionals. This chapter presents a research framework to: identify the collaboration structure among physicians that is effective and efficient for patients, discover effective structural attributes of a collaboration network that evolves during the course of providing care, and explore the impact of socio-demographic characteristics of healthcare professionals, patients, and hospitals on collaboration structures, from the point of view of measurable outcomes such as cost and quality of care. The framework uses illustrative examples drawn from a data set of patients undergoing hip replacement surgery.
Bio-inspired paradigms are proving to be useful in analyzing propagation and dissemination of information in networks. In this paper we explore the use of multi-type branching processes to analyse viral properties of content in a social network, with and without competition from other sources. We derive and compute various virality measures, e.g., probability of virality, expected number of shares, or the rate of growth of expected number of shares etc. They allow one to predict the emergence of global macro properties (e.g., viral spread of a post in the entire network) from the laws and parameters that determine local interactions. The local interactions, greatly depend upon the structure of the timelines holding the content and the number of friends (i.e., connections) of users of the network. We then formulate a non-cooperative game problem and study the Nash equilibria as a function of the parameters. The branching processes modelling the social network under competition turn out to be decomposable, multi-type and continuous time variants. For such processes types belonging to different sub-classes evolve at different rates and have different probabilities of extinction etc. We compute content provider wise extinction probability, rate of growth etc. We also conjecture the content-provider wise growth rate of expected shares.
