Scanning tunneling microscopy is used to image the additional quasiparticle states generated by quantized vortices in the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. They exhibit a Cu-O bond oriented checkerboard pattern, with four unit cell (4a0) periodicity and a ~30 angstrom decay length. These electronic modulations may be related to the magnetic field-induced, 8a0 periodic, spin density modulations of decay length ~70 angstroms recently discovered in La1.84Sr0.16CuO4. The proposed explanation is a spin density wave localized surrounding each vortex core. General theoretical principles predict that, in the cuprates, a localized spin modulation of wavelength L should be associated with a corresponding electronic modulation of wavelength L/2, in good agreement with our observations.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d reveals weak, incommensurate, spatial modulations in the tunneling conductance. Images of these energy-dependent modulations are Fourier analyzed to yield the dispersion of their wavevectors. Comparison of the dispersions with photoemission spectroscopy data indicates that quasiparticle interference, due to elastic scattering between characteristic regions of momentum-space, provides a consistent explanation for the conductance modulations, without appeal to another order parameter. These results refocus attention on quasiparticle scattering processes as potential explanations for other incommensurate phenomena in the cuprates. The momentum-resolved tunneling spectroscopy demonstrated here also provides a new technique with which to study quasiparticles in correlated materials.
Direct visualization of electronic-structure symmetry within each crystalline unit cell is a new technique for complex electronic matter research. By studying the Bragg peaks in Fourier transforms of electronic structure images, and particularly by resolving both the real and imaginary components of the Bragg amplitudes, distinct types of intra-unit cell symmetry breaking can be studied. However, establishing the precise symmetry point of each unit cell in real space is crucial in defining the phase for such Bragg-peak Fourier analysis. Exemplary of this challenge is the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d for which the surface Bi atom locations are observable, while it is the invisible Cu atoms that define the relevant CuO2 unit-cell symmetry point. Here we demonstrate, by imaging with picometer precision the electronic impurity states at individual Zn atoms substituted at Cu sites, that the phase established using the Bi lattice produces a ~2% (2pi) error relative to the actual Cu lattice. Such a phase assignment error would not diminish reliability in the determination of intra-unit-cell rotational symmetry breaking at the CuO2 plane. Moreover, this type of impurity atom substitution at the relevant symmetry site can be of general utility in phase determination for Bragg-peak Fourier analysis of intra-unit-cell symmetry.
We calculate the density of states of a disordered inhomogeneous d-wave superconductor in a magnetic field. The field-induced vortices are assumed to be pinned at random positions and the effects of the scattering of the quasi-particles off the vortices are taken into account using the singular gauge transformation of Franz and Tesanovic. We find two regimes for the density of states: at very low energies the density of states follows a law rho(epsilon) sim rho_0 + |epsilon|^{alpha} where the exponent is close to 1. A good fit of the density of states is obtained at higher energies, excluding a narrow region around the origin, with a similar power law energy dependence but with alpha close to 2. Both at low and at higher energies rho_0 scales with the inverse of the magnetic length (sqrt{B}).

We present a theory of quasiparticle Hall transport in strongly type-II superconductors within their vortex state. We establish the existence of integer quantum spin Hall effect in clean unconventional $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductors in the vortex state from a general analysis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The spin Hall conductivity $sigma^s_{xy}$ is shown to be quantized in units of $frac{hbar}{8pi}$. This result does not rest on linearization of the BdG equations around Dirac nodes and therefore includes inter-nodal physics in its entirety. In addition, this result holds for a generic inversion-symmetric lattice of vortices as long as the magnetic field $B$ satisfies $H_{c1} ll B ll H_{c2}$. We then derive the Wiedemann-Franz law for the spin and thermal Hall conductivity in the vortex state. In the limit of $T to 0$, the thermal Hall conductivity satisfies $kappa_{x y}=frac{4pi^2}{3}(frac{k_B}{hbar})^2 T sigma^s_{xy}$. The transitions between different quantized values of $sigma^s_{xy}$ as well as relation to conventional superconductors are discussed.
Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) measurements in the superconducting dichalcogenide 2H-NbS2 show a peculiar superconducting density of states with two well defined features at 0.97 meV and 0.53 meV, located respectively above and below the value for the superconducting gap expected from single band s-wave BCS model (D=1.76kBTc=0.9 meV). Both features have a continuous temperature evolution and disappear at Tc = 5.7 K. Moreover, we observe the hexagonal vortex lattice with radially symmetric vortices and a well developed localized state at the vortex cores. The sixfold star shape characteristic of the vortex lattice of the compound 2H-NbSe2 is, together with the charge density wave order (CDW), absent in 2H-NbS2.
