We report synthesis of single crystalline NaMnAs, confirm its antiferromagnetic order and characterise the sample by photoemission spectroscopy. The electronic structure was studied using optical transmittance, x-ray and ultraviolet spectroscopy and by theoretical modeling using local density approximation (LDA) extended to LDA+U when Heisenberg model parameters were determined. Optical transmittance measurement have confirmed the theoretical predictions that NaMnAs is a semiconductor. Also the Neel temperature was closer determined for the first time from temperature dependence of magnetization, in agreement with our Monte Carlo simulations.

Two modifications of CeCuSn were prepared from the elements: the high-temperature (beta) modification crystallizes directly from the quenched sample, while the low-temperature (alpha) modification forms after annealing at 700 deg C for one month. Both modifications were investigated by X-ray powder and single crystal diffraction. We find for alpha-CeCuSn a structure of ZrBeSi type, space group P63/mmc, a = 458.2(1), c = 793.7(2) pm, wR2 = 0.0727, 148 F2 values, 8 variable parameters. In the case of beta-CeCuSn we find the NdPtSb type structure, space group P63mc, a = 458.4(1), c = 785.8(2) pm, wR2 = 0.0764, 233 F2 values, 11 variable parameters. The copper and tin atoms build up layers of ordered [Cu3Sn3] hexagons. The layers are planar in beta-CeCuSn, however, with highly anisotropic displacements of the copper and tin atoms. In alpha-CeCuSn a puckering effect is observed resulting in a decrease of the c lattice parameter. Both modifications of CeCuSn exhibit antiferromagnetic ordering, however, there is a considerable difference in their magnetic behaviour. We show the anomalies in the physical properties of the alpha- and beta- modifications of CeCuSn by Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetic and specific heat measurements and explain their structure-property relations.
Alternating layers of granular Iron (Fe) and Titanium dioxide (TiO$_{2-delta}$) were deposited on (100) Lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO$_3$) substrates in low oxygen chamber pressure using a controlled pulsed laser ablation deposition technique. The total thickness of the film was about 200 nm. The films show ferromagnetic behavior for temperatures ranging from 4 to $400 ^oK$. The layered film structure was characterized as p-type magnetic semiconductor at $300 ^oK$ with a carrier density of the order of $10^{20} /cm^3$. The undoped pure TiO$_{2-delta}$ film was characterized as an n-type magnetic semiconductor. The hole carriers were excited at the interface between the granular Fe and TiO$_{2-delta}$ layers similar to holes excited in the metal/n-type semiconductor interface commonly observed in Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (MOS) devices. The holes at the interface were polarized in an applied magnetic field raising the possibility that these granular MOS structures can be utilized for practical spintronic device applications.
Single-crystal diffuse scattering data have been collected at room temperature on synthetic titanite using both neutrons and high-energy X-rays. A simple ball-and-springs model reproduces the observed diffuse scattering well, confirming its origin to be primarily due to thermal motion of the atoms. Ab initio phonons are calculated using density-functional perturbation theory and are shown to reproduce the experimental diffuse scattering. The observed X-ray and neutron scattering patterns are consistent with a summation of mode frequencies and displacement eigenvectors associated with the entire phonon spectrum, rather than with a simple, short-range static displacement. A band gap is observed between 600 and 700 cm-1 with only two modes crossing this region, both associated with antiferroelectric Ti-O motion along a. One of these modes (of Bu symmetry), displays a large LO-TO mode-splitting (562-701.4 cm-1) and has a dominant component coming from Ti-O bond stretching and, thus, the mode-splitting is related to the polarizability of the Ti-O bonds along the chain direction. Similar mode-splitting is observed in piezo- and ferroelectric materials. The calculated phonon dispersion model may be of use to others in the future to understand the phase transition at higher temperatures, as well as in the interpretation of measured phonon dispersion curves.
We address the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of electron doped d0 perovskite semiconductors in cubic and tetragonal phases using the k*p method. The Hamiltonian depends on the spin-orbit interaction strength, on the temperature-dependent tetragonal distortion, and on a set of effective-mass parameters whose number is determined by the symmetry of the crystal. We explain how these parameters can be extracted from angle resolved photo-emission, Raman spectroscopy, and magneto-transport measurements and estimate their values in SrTiO3.

We report magnetism in carbon doped ZnO. Our first-principles calculations based on density functional theory predicted that carbon substitution for oxygen in ZnO results in a magnetic moment of 1.78 $mu_B$ per carbon. The theoretical prediction was confirmed experimentally. C-doped ZnO films deposited by pulsed laser deposition with various carbon concentrations showed ferromagnetism with Curie temperatures higher than 400 K, and the measured magnetic moment based on the content of carbide in the films ($1.5 - 3.0 mu_B$ per carbon) is in agreement with the theoretical prediction. The magnetism is due to bonding coupling between Zn ions and doped C atoms. Results of magneto-resistance and abnormal Hall effect show that the doped films are $n$-type semiconductors with intrinsic ferromagnetism. The carbon doped ZnO could be a promising room temperature dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) and our work demonstrates possiblity of produing DMS with non-metal doping.
