The multichannel Kondo model supports effective anyons on the partially screened impurity, as suggested by its fractional impurity entropy. It was recently demonstrated for the multi-impurity chiral Kondo model, that scattering of an electron through the impurities depends on, and thus can effectively measure, the total fusion channel of effective anyons living on the impurities. Here we study the correlation between impurity-spins. We argue, based on a combination of conformal field theory, a perturbative limit with a large number of channels $k$, and the exactly solvable two-channel case, that the inter-impurity spin correlation probes the anyon fusion of the pair of correlated impurities. This may allow, using measurement-only topological quantum computing protocols, to braid the multichannel Kondo anyons via consecutive measurements.
In a Kondo lattice, the spin exchange coupling between a local spin and the conduction electrons acquires nonlocal contributions due to conduction electron scattering from surrounding local spins and the subsequent RKKY interaction. It leads to a hitherto unrecognized interference of Kondo screening and the RKKY interaction beyond the Doniach scenario. We develop a renormalization group theory for the RKKY-modified Kondo vertex. The Kondo temperature, $T_K(y)$, is suppressed in a universal way, controlled by the antiferromagnetic RKKY coupling parameter $y$. Complete spin screening ceases to exist beyond a critical RKKY strength $y_c$ even in the absence of magnetic ordering. At this breakdown point, $T_K(y)$ remains nonzero and is not defined for larger RKKY couplings, $y>y_c$. The results are in quantitative agreement with STM spectroscopy experiments on tunable two-impurity Kondo systems. The possible implications for quantum critical scenarios in heavy-fermion systems are discussed.
The Kondo resonance at the Fermi level is well-established for the electronic structure of Ce (f1 electron) and Yb (f1 hole) based systems. In this work, we report complementary experimental and theoretical studies on the Kondo resonance in Pr-based f2 system, PrTi2Al20. Using Pr 3d-4f resonant photoemission spectroscopy and single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) calculations including the full multiplets of Pr ions, we show that an f2 system can also give rise to a Kondo resonance at the Fermi level. The Kondo resonance peak is experimentally observed through a final-state-multiplet dependent resonance and is reproduced with properly tuned hybridization strength in SIAM calculations.
We derive some of the axioms of the algebraic theory of anyon [A. Kitaev, Ann. Phys., 321, 2 (2006)] from a conjectured form of entanglement area law for two-dimensional gapped systems. We derive the fusion rules of topological charges and show that the multiplicities of the fusion rules satisfy these axioms. Moreover, even though we make no assumption about the exact value of the constant sub-leading term of the entanglement entropy of a disk-like region, this term is shown to be equal to $ln mathcal{D}$, where $mathcal{D}$ is the total quantum dimension of the underlying anyon theory. These derivations are rigorous and follow from the entanglement area law alone. More precisely, our framework starts from two local entropic constraints, which are implied by the area law. From these constraints, we prove what we refer to as the isomorphism theorem. The existence of superselection sectors and fusion multiplicities follows from this theorem, even without assuming anything about the parent Hamiltonian. These objects and the axioms of the anyon theory are shown to emerge from the structure and the internal self-consistency relations of the information convex sets.
In the first step, experiments on a single cerium or ytterbium Kondo impurity reveal the importance of the Kondo temperature by comparison to other type of couplings like the hyperfine interaction, the crystal field and the intersite coupling. The extension to a lattice is discussed. Emphasis is given on the fact that the occupation number $n_f$ of the trivalent configuration may be the implicit key variable even for the Kondo lattice. Three $(P, H, T)$ phase diagrams are discussed: CeRu$_2$Si$_2$, CeRhIn$_5$ and SmS.
The underscreened Kondo effect is studied within a model of two impurities S=1 interacting with the conduction band and via an interimpurity coupling $Kvec{S_1}.vec{S_2}$. Using a mean-field treatment of the bosonized Hamiltonian, we show that there is no phase transition, but a continuous cross-over versus K from a non Kondo behaviour to an underscreened Kondo one. For a small antiferromagnetic coupling (K>0), a completely asymmetric situation is obtained with one s=${1/2}$ component strongly screened by the Kondo effect and the other one almost free to yield indirect magnetism, which shows finally a possible coexistence between a RKKY interaction and a local Kondo effect, as observed in Uranium compounds such as $UPt_3$.
