This paper proposes a novel framework for resource-aware control design termed performance-barrier-based triggering. Given a feedback policy, along with a Lyapunov function certificate that guarantees its correctness, we examine the problem of designing its digital implementation through event-triggered control while ensuring a prescribed performance is met and triggers occur as sparingly as possible. Our methodology takes into account the performance residual, i.e., how well the system is doing in regards to the prescribed performance. Inspired by the notion of control barrier function, the trigger design allows the certificate to deviate from monotonically decreasing, with leeway specified as an increasing function of the performance residual, resulting in greater flexibility in prescribing update times. We study different types of performance specifications, with particular attention to quantifying the benefits of the proposed approach in the exponential case. We build on this to design intrinsically Zeno-free distributed triggers for network systems. A comparison of event-triggered approaches in a vehicle platooning problem shows how the proposed design meets the prescribed performance with a significantly lower number of controller updates.

Wireless sensors and actuators offer benefits to large industrial control systems. The absence of wires for communication reduces the deployment cost, maintenance effort, and provides greater flexibility for sensor and actuator location and system architecture. These benefits come at a cost of a high probability of communication delay or message loss due to the unreliability of radio-based communication. This unreliability poses a challenge to contemporary control systems that are designed with the assumption of instantaneous and reliable communication. Wireless sensors and actuators create a paradigm shift in engineering energy-efficient control schemes coupled with robust communication schemes that can maintain system stability in the face of unreliable communication. This paper investigates the feasibility of using the low-power wide-area communication protocol LoRaWAN with an event-triggered control scheme through modelling in Matlab. We show that LoRaWAN is capable of meeting the maximum delay and message loss requirements of an event-triggered controller for certain classes of applications. We also expose the limitation in the use of LoRaWAN when message size or communication range requirements increase or the underlying physical system is exposed to significant external disturbances.

This paper studies periodic event-triggered networked control for nonlinear systems, where the plants and controllers are connected by multiple independent communication channels. Several network-induced imperfections are considered simultaneously, including time-varying inter-sampling times, sensor node scheduling, and especially, large time-varying transmission delays, where the transmitted signal may arrive at the destination node after the next transmission occurs. A new hybrid system approach is provided to model the closed-loop system that contains all communication related behavior. Then, by constructing new storage functions on the system state and updating errors, the relationship between the maximum allowable sampling period (MASP) and maximum allowable delay number in sampling (MADNS) is analyzed, where the latter denotes how many inter-sampling periods can be included in one transmission delay. Moreover, to efficiently reduce unnecessary transmissions, a new dynamic event-triggered control scheme is proposed, where the event-triggering conditions are detected only at aperiodic and asynchronous sampling instants. From emulation-based method, where the controllers are initially designed by ignoring all the network-induced imperfections, sufficient conditions on the dynamic event-triggered control are given to ensure closed-loop input-to-state stability with respect to external disturbances. Moreover, according to different capacities of the communication channels, the corresponding implementation strategies of the designed dynamic event-triggered control schemes are discussed. Finally, two nonlinear examples are simulated to illustrate the feasibility and efficiency of the theoretical results.
Preference-based global optimization algorithms minimize an unknown objective function only based on whether the function is better, worse, or similar for given pairs of candidate optimization vectors. Such optimization problems arise in many real-life examples, such as finding the optimal calibration of the parameters of a control law. The calibrator can judge whether a particular combination of parameters leads to a better, worse, or similar closed-loop performance. Often, the search for the optimal parameters is also subject to unknown constraints. For example, the vector of calibration parameters must not lead to closed-loop instability. This paper extends an active preference learning algorithm introduced recently by the authors to handle unknown constraints. The proposed method, called C-GLISp, looks for an optimizer of the problem only based on preferences expressed on pairs of candidate vectors, and on whether a given vector is reported feasible and/or satisfactory. C-GLISp learns a surrogate of the underlying objective function based on the expressed preferences, and a surrogate of the probability that a sample is feasible and/or satisfactory based on whether each of the tested vectors was judged as such. The surrogate functions are used to propose a new candidate vector for testing and assessment iteratively. Numerical benchmarks and a semi-automated control calibration task demonstrate the effectiveness of C-GLISp, showing that it can reach near-optimal solutions within a small number of iterations.
Transmission line failures in power systems propagate and cascade non-locally. This well-known yet counter-intuitive feature makes it even more challenging to optimally and reliably operate these complex networks. In this work we present a comprehensive framework based on spectral graph theory that fully and rigorously captures how multiple simultaneous line failures propagate, distinguishing between non-cut and cut set outages. Using this spectral representation of power systems, we identify the crucial graph sub-structure that ensures line failure localization -- the network bridge-block decomposition. Leveraging this theory, we propose an adaptive network topology reconfiguration paradigm that uses a two-stage algorithm where the first stage aims to identify optimal clusters using the notion of network modularity and the second stage refines the clusters by means of optimal line switching actions. Our proposed methodology is illustrated using extensive numerical examples on standard IEEE networks and we discussed several extensions and variants of the proposed algorithm.
We present a data-driven model predictive control scheme for chance-constrained Markovian switching systems with unknown switching probabilities. Using samples of the underlying Markov chain, ambiguity sets of transition probabilities are estimated which include the true conditional probability distributions with high probability. These sets are updated online and used to formulate a time-varying, risk-averse optimal control problem. We prove recursive feasibility of the resulting MPC scheme and show that the original chance constraints remain satisfied at every time step. Furthermore, we show that under sufficient decrease of the confidence levels, the resulting MPC scheme renders the closed-loop system mean-square stable with respect to the true-but-unknown distributions, while remaining less conservative than a fully robust approach.
