Asymmetric transmission - direction-selective control of electromagnetic transmission between two ports - is an important phenomenon typically exhibited by two-dimensional chiral systems. Here, we study this phenomenon in chiral plasmonic metasurfaces supporting lattice plasmons modes. We show, both numerically and experimentally, that asymmetric transmission can be achieved through an unbalanced excitation of such lattice modes by circularly polarized light of opposite handedness. The excitation efficiencies of the lattice modes, and hence the strength of the asymmetric transmission, can be controlled by engineering the in-plane scattering of the individual plasmonic nanoparticles such that the maximum scattering imbalance occurs along one of the in-plane diffraction orders of the metasurface. Our study also shows that, contrary to the case of a non-diffractive metasurface, the lattice-plasmon-enabled asymmetric transmission can occur at normal incidence for cases where the metasurface is composed of chiral or achiral nanoparticles possessing 4-fold rotational symmetry.

We present the characteristics of a simple waveguiding structure constructed by anisotropic birefringent crystal-metal-chiral medium, anisotropic-metal-chiral in short, and reveal the chiral-dependent dispersion and propagation properties of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). We demonstrate its remarkable discrimination ability to the magnitude and sign of both the real and imaginary part of the chirality parameter. The anisotropy plays a key role in such performance and shows tuneable ability in enantiomeric discrimination even when the chirality parameter is complex-valued. Most importantly, the physical origin of chiral discrimination stems from the extrinsic chirality of the system, which arises from the mutual orientation of the SPPs and the optical axis. Moreover, we also clarify the fundamental physics behind the chiral discriminating behaviour by associating the intrinsic quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) of the SPPs with the electromagnetic field analysis. This structure does not rely on complicated fabrication but provides the opportunity of on-chip surface-sensitive biosensing. We anticipate that our work will stimulate intensive research to investigate the anisotropy-induced chiral sensing techniques in plasmonic platforms.
We develop a theory of the magnetic field-induced formation of Skyrmion crystal state in chiral magnets in two spatial dimensions, motivated by the recent discovery of the Skyrmionic phase of magnetization in thin film of Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$Si and in the A-phase of MnSi. Ginzburg-Landau functional of the chiral magnet re-written in the CP$^1$ representation is shown to be a convenient framework for the analysis of the Skyrmion states. Phase diagram of the model at zero temperature gives a sequence of ground states, helical spin $rightarrow$ Skyrme crystal $rightarrow$ ferromagnet, as the external field $B$ increases, in good accord with the thin-film experiment. In close analogy with Abrikosovs derivation of the vortex lattice solution in type-II superconductor, the CP$^1$ mean-field equation is solved and shown to reproduce the Skyrmion crystal state.

Launching of surface plasmons by swift electrons has long been utilized in electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) to investigate plasmonic properties of ultrathin, or two-dimensional (2D), electron systems. However, its spatio-temporal process has never been revealed. This is because the impact of an electron will generate not only plasmons, but also photons, whose emission cannot be achieved at a single space-time point, as fundamentally determined from the uncertainty principle. Here, we propose that such a space-time limitation also applies to surface plasmon generation in EELS experiment. On the platform of graphene, we demonstrate within the framework of classical electrodynamics that the launching of 2D plasmons by an electrons impact is delayed after a hydrodynamic splashing-like process, which occurs during the plasmonic formation time when the electron traverses the formation zone. Considering this newly revealed process, we show that previous estimates on the yields of graphene plasmons in EELS have been overestimated.
High-index nanoparticle lattices have attracted a lot of interest recently as they support both optical electric and magnetic resonances and can serve as functional metasurfaces. Here we demonstrate that under particular conditions, the all-dielectric nanoparticle metasurfaces can resonantly suppress transmission. Electric and magnetic dipole resonances of silicon nanoparticle arrays are studied in the air and in the dielectric matrix in visible and near-infrared spectral ranges. We show that the wave resonantly scattered forward by the one or both electric and magnetic dipole moments of nanoparticles can destructively interfere with the incident wave, providing significant suppression of the transmission through the array. The reported effect can find important applications in different fields related to optics and photonics such as the development of filters, sensors, and solar cells.
We report on the manipulation of magnetization by femtosecond laser pulses in a periodic array of cylindrical nickel nanoparticles. By performing experiments at different wavelength, we show that the excitation of collective surface plasmon resonances triggers demagnetization in zero field or magnetic switching in a small perpendicular field. Both magnetic effects are explained by plasmon-induced heating of the nickel nanoparticles to their Curie temperature. Model calculations confirm the strong correlation between the excitation of surface plasmon modes and laser-induced changes in magnetization.
