One of the most important barriers toward a widespread use of mobile robots in unstructured and human populated work environments is the ability to plan a safe path. In this paper, we propose to delegate this activity to a human operator that walks in front of the robot marking with her/his footsteps the path to be followed. The implementation of this approach requires a high degree of robustness in locating the specific person to be followed (the leader). We propose a three phase approach to fulfil this goal: 1. identification and tracking of the person in the image space, 2. sensor fusion between camera data and laser sensors, 3. point interpolation with continuous curvature curves. Real world visual navigation requires robots to operate in unfamiliar, human-occupied dynamic environments. Navigation around humans is especially difficult because it requires anticipating their future motion, which can be quite challenging. We propose an approach that combines learning-based perception with model-based optimal control to navigate among humans based only on monocular, first-person RGB images. Our approach is enabled by our novel data-generation tool, HumANav that allows for photorealistic renderings of indoor environment scenes with humans in them, which are then used to train the perception module entirely in simulation. Through simulations and experiments on a mobile robot, we demonstrate that the learned navigation policies can anticipate and react to humans without explicitly predicting future human motion, generalize to previously unseen environments and human behaviors, and transfer directly from simulation to reality. Videos describing our approach and experiments, as well as a demo of HumANav are available on the project website.
The paper presents a path planning algorithm based on RRT* that addresses the risk of grounding during evasive manoeuvres to avoid collision. The planner achieves this objective by integrating a collective navigation experience with the systematic use of water depth information from the electronic navigational chart. Multivariate kernel density estimation is applied to historical AIS data to generate a probabilistic model describing seafarers best practices while sailing in confined waters. This knowledge is then encoded into the RRT* cost function to penalize path deviations that would lead own ship to sail in shallow waters. Depth contours satisfying the own ship draught define the actual navigable area, and triangulation of this non-convex region is adopted to enable uniform sampling. This ensures the optimal path deviation.
As drones and autonomous cars become more widespread it is becoming increasingly important that robots can operate safely under realistic conditions. The noisy information fed into real systems means that robots must use estimates of the environment to plan navigation. Efficiently guaranteeing that the resulting motion plans are safe under these circumstances has proved difficult. We examine how to guarantee that a trajectory or policy is safe with only imperfect observations of the environment. We examine the implications of various mathematical formalisms of safety and arrive at a mathematical notion of safety of a long-term execution, even when conditioned on observational information. We present efficient algorithms that can prove that trajectories or policies are safe with much tighter bounds than in previous work. Notably, the complexity of the environment does not affect our methods ability to evaluate if a trajectory or policy is safe. We then use these safety checking methods to design a safe variant of the RRT planning algorithm.
Planning high-speed trajectories for UAVs in unknown environments requires algorithmic techniques that enable fast reaction times to guarantee safety as more information about the environment becomes available. The standard approaches that ensure safety by enforcing a stop condition in the free-known space can severely limit the speed of the vehicle, especially in situations where much of the world is unknown. Moreover, the ad-hoc time and interval allocation scheme usually imposed on the trajectory also leads to conservative and slower trajectories. This work proposes FASTER (Fast and Safe Trajectory Planner) to ensure safety without sacrificing speed. FASTER obtains high-speed trajectories by enabling the local planner to optimize in both the free-known and unknown spaces. Safety is ensured by always having a safe back-up trajectory in the free-known space. The MIQP formulation proposed also allows the solver to choose the trajectory interval allocation. FASTER is tested extensively in simulation and in real hardware, showing flights in unknown cluttered environments with velocities up to 7.8m/s, and experiments at the maximum speed of a skid-steer ground robot (2m/s).
Safety is of great importance in multi-robot navigation problems. In this paper, we propose a control barrier function (CBF) based optimizer that ensures robot safety with both high probability and flexibility, using only sensor measurement. The optimizer takes action commands from the policy network as initial values and then provides refinement to drive the potentially dangerous ones back into safe regions. With the help of a deep transition model that predicts the evolution of surrounding dynamics and the consequences of different actions, the CBF module can guide the optimization in a reasonable time horizon. We also present a novel joint training framework that improves the cooperation between the Reinforcement Learning (RL) based policy and the CBF-based optimizer both in training and inference procedures by utilizing reward feedback from the CBF module. We observe that the policy using our method can achieve a higher success rate while maintaining the safety of multiple robots in significantly fewer episodes compared with other methods. Experiments are conducted in multiple scenarios both in simulation and the real world, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in maintaining the safety of multi-robot navigation.
