The determination of the isothermal adsorption curves represents a mechanism that allows ob-taining information on the process of adsorption of water in organic and inorganic materials. In addition, it is a measure to be considered when characterizing the physicochemical and structural properties of the materials. We want to present an approach to the state of knowledge about the methods to characterize seeds and materials associated with food products physically and struc-turally, and to relate this knowledge to biophysical processes in these materials. This review considers the papers available since 2001 associated with water adsorption studies on seeds and other food products as well as the approach of different authors to to technical and experimental models and processes that are needed for the development of this topic. From these articles the applied experimental methodologies (obtaining samples, environmental conditions and labor-atory equipment) and the mathematical models used to give physical, chemical and biological meaning to the results were analyzed and discussed, concluding in the methodologies that have best adapted to the advance of the technology for obtaining isothermal curves in the last years.

Objectives: A conflicting body of evidence suggests localized periodontal inflammation to spread systemically during pregnancy inducing adverse pregnancy outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to specifically evaluate the relationship between periodontitis and preeclampsia. Methods: Electronic searches were carried out in Medline, Pubmed, Cochrane Controlled Clinical Trial Register to identify and select observational case-control and cohort studies that analyzed the association between periodontal disease and preeclampsia. Prisma guidelines and Moose checklist were followed. Results: Thirty studies including six cohorts and twenty-four case-control studies were selected. Periodontitis was significantly associated with increased risk for preeclampsia, especially in a subgroup analysis including cohort studies and subgroup analysis with lower-middle-income countries. Conclusion: Periodontitis appears as a significant risk factor for preeclampsia, which might be even more pronounced in lower-middle-income countries.
In the past decade, digital technologies have started to profoundly influence healthcare systems. Digital self-tracking has facilitated more precise epidemiological studies, and in the field of nutritional epidemiology, mobile apps have the potential to alleviate a significant part of the journaling burden by, for example, allowing users to record their food intake via a simple scan of packaged products barcodes. Such studies thus rely on databases of commercialized products, their barcodes, ingredients, and nutritional values, which are not yet openly available with sufficient geographical and product coverage. In this paper, we present FoodRepo (https://www.foodrepo.org), an open food repository of barcoded food items, whose database is programmatically accessible through an application programming interface (API). Furthermore, an open source license gives the appropriate rights to anyone to share and reuse FoodRepo data, including for commercial purposes. With currently more than 21,000 items available on the Swiss market, our database represents a solid starting point for large-scale studies in the field of digital nutrition, with the aim to lead to a better understanding of the intricate connections between diets and health in general, and metabolic disorders in particular.
Background: Since the invention of next-generation RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) technologies, they have become a powerful tool to study the presence and quantity of RNA molecules in biological samples and have revolutionized transcriptomic studies. The analysis of RNA-seq data at four different levels (samples, genes, transcripts, and exons) involve multiple statistical and computational questions, some of which remain challenging up to date. Results: We review RNA-seq analysis tools at the sample, gene, transcript, and exon levels from a statistical perspective. We also highlight the biological and statistical questions of most practical considerations. Conclusion: The development of statistical and computational methods for analyzing RNA- seq data has made significant advances in the past decade. However, methods developed to answer the same biological question often rely on diverse statical models and exhibit different performance under different scenarios. This review discusses and compares multiple commonly used statistical models regarding their assumptions, in the hope of helping users select appropriate methods as needed, as well as assisting developers for future method development.

The molecular mechanism of ion channel gating and substrate modulation is elusive for many voltage gated ion channels, such as eukaryotic sodium ones. The understanding of channel functions is a pressing issue in molecular biophysics and biology. Mathematical modeling, computation and analysis of membrane channel charge transport have become an emergent field and give rise to significant contributions to our understanding of ion channel gating and function. This review summarizes recent progresses and outlines remaining challenges in mathematical modeling, simulation and analysis of ion channel charge transport. One of our focuses is the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) model and its generalizations. Specifically, the basic framework of the PNP system and some of its extensions, including size effects, ion-water interactions, coupling with density functional theory and relation to fluid flow models. A reduced theory, the Poisson- Boltzmann-Nernst-Planck (PBNP) model, and a differential geometry based ion transport model are also discussed. For proton channel, a multiscale and multiphysics Poisson-Boltzmann-Kohn-Sham (PBKS) model is presented. We show that all of these ion channel models can be cast into a unified variational multiscale framework with a macroscopic continuum domain of the solvent and a microscopic discrete domain of the solute. The main strategy is to construct a total energy functional of a charge transport system to encompass the polar and nonpolar free energies of solvation and chemical potential related energies. Current computational algorithms and tools for numerical simulations and results from mathematical analysis of ion channel systems are also surveyed.
The existence of the exclusion zone (EZ), a layer of water in which plastic microspheres are repelled from hydrophilic surfaces, has now been independently demonstrated by several groups. A better understanding of the mechanisms which generate EZs would help with understanding the possible importance of EZs in biology and in engineering applications such as filtration and microfluidics. Here we review the experimental evidence for EZ phenomena in water and the major theories that have been proposed. We review experimental results from birefringence, neutron radiography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and other studies. Pollack and others have theorized that water in the EZ exists has a different structure than bulk water, and that this accounts for the EZ. We present several alternative explanations for EZs and argue that Schurrs theory based on diffusiophoresis presents a compelling alternative explanation for the core EZ phenomenon. Among other things, Schurrs theory makes predictions about the growth of the EZ with time which have been confirmed by Florea et al. and others. We also touch on several possible confounding factors that make experimentation on EZs difficult, such as charged surface groups, dissolved solutes, and adsorbed nanobubbles.
