The aerodynamic performance of the high-lift configuration greatly influences the safety and economy of commercial aircraft. Accurately predicting the aerodynamic performance of the high-lift configuration, especially the stall behavior, is important for aircraft design. However, the complex flow phenomena of high-lift configurations pose substantial difficulties to current turbulence models. In this paper, a three-equation k-(v^2)-{omega} turbulence model for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations is used to compute the stall behavior of high-lift configurations. A separated shear layer fixed function is implemented in the turbulence model to better capture the nonequilibrium characteristics of turbulence. Different high-lift configurations, including the two-dimensional multielement NLR7301 and Omar airfoils and a complex full-configuration model (JAXA Standard Model), are numerically tested. The results indicate that the effect of the nonequilibrium characteristics of turbulence is significant in the free shear layer, which is key to accurately predicting the stall behavior of high-lift devices. The modified SPF k-(v^2 )-{omega} model is more accurate in predicting stall behavior than the Spalart-Allmaras, shear stress transport, and original k-(v^2)-{omega} models for the full high-lift configuration. The relative errors in the predicted maximum lift coefficients are within 3% of the experimental data.

This paper presents flow simulation results of the EUROLIFT DLR-F11 multi-element wing configuration, obtained with a highly scalable finite element solver, PHASTA. This work was accomplished as a part of the 2nd high lift prediction workshop. In-house meshes were constructed with increasing mesh density for analysis. A solution adaptive approach was used as an alternative and its effectiveness was studied by comparing its results with the ones obtained with other meshes. Comparisons between the numerical solution obtained with unsteady RANS turbulence model and available experimental results are provided for verification and discussion. Based on the observations, future direction for adaptive research and simulations with higher fidelity turbulence models is outlined.
This article presents an original methodology for the prediction of steady turbulent aerodynamic fields. Due to the important computational cost of high-fidelity aerodynamic simulations, a surrogate model is employed to cope with the significant variations of several inflow conditions. Specifically, the Local Decomposition Method presented in this paper has been derived to capture nonlinear behaviors resulting from the presence of continuous and discontinuous signals. A combination of unsupervised and supervised learning algorithms is coupled with a physical criterion. It decomposes automatically the input parameter space, from a limited number of high-fidelity simulations, into subspaces. These latter correspond to different flow regimes. A measure of entropy identifies the subspace with the expected strongest non-linear behavior allowing to perform an active resampling on this low-dimensional structure. Local reduced-order models are built on each subspace using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition coupled with a multivariate interpolation tool. The methodology is assessed on the turbulent two-dimensional flow around the RAE2822 transonic airfoil. It exhibits a significant improvement in term of prediction accuracy for the Local Decomposition Method compared with the classical method of surrogate modeling for cases with different flow regimes.
The motion of a large, neutrally buoyant, particle, freely advected by a turbulent flow is determined experimentally. We demonstrate that both the translational and angular accelerations exhibit very wide probability distributions, a manifestation of intermittency. The orientation of the angular velocity with respect to the trajectory, as well as the translational acceleration conditioned on the spinning velocity provide evidence of a lift force acting on the particle.
In order to generalize the well-known spanwise-oscillating-wall technique for drag reduction, non-sinusoidal oscillations of a solid wall are considered as a means to alter the skin-friction drag in a turbulent channel flow. A series of Direct Numerical Simulations is conducted to evaluate the control performance of nine different temporal waveforms, in addition to the usual sinusoid, systematically changing the wave amplitude and the period for each waveform. The turbulent average spanwise motion is found to coincide with the laminar Stokes solution that is constructed, for the generic waveform, through harmonic superposition. This allows us to define and compute, for each waveform, a new penetration depth of the Stokes layer which correlates with the amount of turbulent drag reduction, and eventually to predict both turbulent drag reduction and net energy saving rate for arbitrary waveforms. Among the waveforms considered, the maximum net energy saving rate is obtained by the sinusoidal wave at its optimal amplitude and period. However, the sinusoid is not the best waveform at every point in the parameter space. Our predictive tool offers simple guidelines to design waveforms that outperform the sinusoid for given (suboptimal) amplitude and period of oscillation. This is potentially interesting in view of applications, where physical limitations often preclude the actuator to reach its optimal operating conditions.
We extend the impulse theory for unsteady aerodynamics, from its classic global form to finite-domain formulation then to minimum-domain form, and from incompressible to compressible flows. For incompressible flow, the minimum-domain impulse theory raises the finding of Li and Lu (J. Fluid Mech., 712: 598-613, 2012) to a theorem: The entire force with discrete wake is completely determined by only the time rate of impulse of those vortical structures still connecting to the body, along with the Lamb-vector integral thereof that captures the contribution of all the rest disconnected vortical structures. For compressible flow, we find that the global form in terms of the curl of momentum, obtained by Huang (Unsteady Vortical Aerodynamics. Shanghai Jiaotong Univ. Press, 1994), can be generalized to having arbitrary finite domain, but the formula is cumbersome and in general the curl of momentum no longer has discrete structure and hence no minimum-domain theory exists. Nevertheless, as the measure of transverse process only, the unsteady field of vorticity may still have discrete wake. This leads to a minimum-domain compressible vorticity-moment theory in terms of density-weighted vorticity (but it is beyond the classic concept of impulse). These new findings and applications have been confirmed by our numerical experiments. The results not only open an avenue to combine the theory with computation-experiment in wide applications, but also reveals a physical truth that it is no longer necessary to account for all wake vortical structures in computing the force and moment.
