We study linear inhomogeneous kinetic equations with an external confining potential and a collision operator with several local conservation laws (local density, momentum and energy). We exhibit all equilibria and entropy-maximizing special modes, and we prove asymptotic exponential convergence of solutions to them with quantitative rate. This is the first complete picture of hypocoercivity and quantitative $H$-theorem for inhomogeneous kinetic equations in this setting.
Generalizing results by Bryant and Griffiths [Duke Math. J., 1995, V.78, 531-676], we completely describe local conservation laws of second-order (1+1)-dimensional evolution equations up to contact equivalence. The possible dimensions of spaces of conservation laws prove to be 0, 1, 2 and infinity. The canonical forms of equations with respect to contact equivalence are found for all nonzero dimensions of spaces of conservation laws.
We carry out an extensive investigation of conservation laws and potential symmetries for the class of linear (1+1)-dimensional second-order parabolic equations. The group classification of this class is revised by employing admissible transformations, the notion of normalized classes of differential equations and the adjoint variational principle. All possible potential conservation laws are described completely. They are in fact exhausted by local conservation laws. For any equation from the above class the characteristic space of local conservation laws is isomorphic to the solution set of the adjoint equation. Effective criteria for the existence of potential symmetries are proposed. Their proofs involve a rather intricate interplay between different representations of potential systems, the notion of a potential equation associated with a tuple of characteristics, prolongation of the equivalence group to the whole potential frame and application of multiple dual Darboux transformations. Based on the tools developed, a preliminary analysis of generalized potential symmetries is carried out and then applied to substantiate our construction of potential systems. The simplest potential symmetries of the linear heat equation, which are associated with single conservation laws, are classified with respect to its point symmetry group. Equations possessing infinite series of potential symmetry algebras are studied in detail.
We study a geometric variational problem arising from modeling two-dimensional charged drops of a perfectly conducting liquid in the presence of an external potential. We characterize the semicontinuous envelope of the energy in terms of a parameter measuring the relative strength of the Coulomb interaction. As a consequence, when the potential is confining and the Coulomb repulsion strength is below a critical value, we show existence and partial regularity of volume-constrained minimizers. We also derive the Euler--Lagrange equation satisfied by regular critical points, expressing the first variation of the Coulombic energy in terms of the normal $frac12$-derivative of the capacitary potential.
The one-dimensional viscous conservation law is considered on the whole line $$ u_t + f(u)_x=eps u_{xx},quad (x,t)inRRtimesoverline{RP},quad eps>0, $$ subject to positive measure initial data. The flux $fin C^1(RR)$ is assumed to satisfy a $p-$condition, a weak form of convexity. Existence and uniqueness of solutions is established. The method of proof relies on sharp decay estimates for viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations.
The direct method based on the definition of conserved currents of a system of differential equations is applied to compute the space of conservation laws of the (1+1)-dimensional wave equation in the light-cone coordinates. Then Noethers theorem yields the space of variational symmetries of the corresponding functional. The results are also presented for the standard space-time form of the wave equation.
