We consider the problem of computing shortest paths in weighted unit-disk graphs in constant dimension $d$. Although the single-source and all-pairs variants of this problem are well-studied in the plane case, no non-trivial exact distance oracles for unit-disk graphs have been known to date, even for $d=2$. The classical result of Sedgewick and Vitter [Algorithmica 86] shows that for weighted unit-disk graphs in the plane the $A^*$ search has average-case performance superior to that of a standard shortest path algorithm, e.g., Dijkstras algorithm. Specifically, if the $n$ corresponding points of a weighted unit-disk graph $G$ are picked from a unit square uniformly at random, and the connectivity radius is $rin (0,1)$, $A^*$ finds a shortest path in $G$ in $O(n)$ expected time when $r=Omega(sqrt{log n/n})$, even though $G$ has $Theta((nr)^2)$ edges in expectation. In other words, the work done by the algorithm is in expectation proportional to the number of vertices and not the number of edges. In this paper, we break this natural barrier and show even stronger sublinear time results. We propose a new heuristic approach to computing point-to-point exact shortest paths in unit-disk graphs. We analyze the average-case behavior of our heuristic using the same random graph model as used by Sedgewick and Vitter and prove it superior to $A^*$. Specifically, we show that, if we are able to report the set of all $k$ points of $G$ from an arbitrary rectangular region of the plane in $O(k + t(n))$ time, then a shortest path between arbitrary two points of such a random graph on the plane can be found in $O(1/r^2 + t(n))$ expected time. In particular, the state-of-the-art range reporting data structures imply a sublinear expected bound for all $r=Omega(sqrt{log n/n})$ and $O(sqrt{n})$ expected bound for $r=Omega(n^{-1/4})$ after only near-linear preprocessing of the point set.
Let $Vsubsetmathbb{R}^2$ be a set of $n$ sites in the plane. The unit disk graph $DG(V)$ of $V$ is the graph with vertex set $V$ in which two sites $v$ and $w$ are adjacent if and only if their Euclidean distance is at most $1$. We develop a compact routing scheme for $DG(V)$. The routing scheme preprocesses $DG(V)$ by assigning a label $l(v)$ to every site $v$ in $V$. After that, for any two sites $s$ and $t$, the scheme must be able to route a packet from $s$ to $t$ as follows: given the label of a current vertex $r$ (initially, $r=s$) and the label of the target vertex $t$, the scheme determines a neighbor $r$ of $r$. Then, the packet is forwarded to $r$, and the process continues until the packet reaches its desired target $t$. The resulting path between the source $s$ and the target $t$ is called the routing path of $s$ and $t$. The stretch of the routing scheme is the maximum ratio of the total Euclidean length of the routing path and of the shortest path in $DG(V)$, between any two sites $s, t in V$. We show that for any given $varepsilon>0$, we can construct a routing scheme for $DG(V)$ with diameter $D$ that achieves stretch $1+varepsilon$ and label size $O(log Dlog^3n/loglog n)$ (the constant in the $O$-Notation depends on $varepsilon$). In the past, several routing schemes for unit disk graphs have been proposed. Our scheme is the first one to achieve poly-logarithmic label size and arbitrarily small stretch without storing any additional information in the packet.
Resolving an open question from 2006, we prove the existence of light-weight bounded-degree spanners for unit ball graphs in the metrics of bounded doubling dimension, and we design a simple $mathcal{O}(log^*n)$-round distributed algorithm that given a unit ball graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and a positive constant $epsilon < 1$ finds a $(1+epsilon)$-spanner with constant bounds on its maximum degree and its lightness using only 2-hop neighborhood information. This immediately improves the algorithm of Damian, Pandit, and Pemmaraju which runs in $mathcal{O}(log^*n)$ rounds but has a $mathcal{O}(log Delta)$ bound on its lightness, where $Delta$ is the ratio of the length of the longest edge in $G$ to the length of the shortest edge. We further study the problem in the two dimensional Euclidean plane and we provide a construction with similar properties that has a constant average number of edge intersection per node. This is the first distributed low-intersection topology control algorithm to the best of our knowledge. Our distributed algorithms rely on the maximal independent set algorithm of Schneider and Wattenhofer that runs in $mathcal{O}(log^*n)$ rounds of communication. If a maximal independent set is known beforehand, our algorithms run in constant number of rounds.

Let $mathcal{P}$ be a polygonal domain of $h$ holes and $n$ vertices. We study the problem of constructing a data structure that can compute a shortest path between $s$ and $t$ in $mathcal{P}$ under the $L_1$ metric for any two query points $s$ and $t$. To do so, a standard approach is to first find a set of $n_s$ gateways for $s$ and a set of $n_t$ gateways for $t$ such that there exist a shortest $s$-$t$ path containing a gateway of $s$ and a gateway of $t$, and then compute a shortest $s$-$t$ path using these gateways. Previous algorithms all take quadratic $O(n_scdot n_t)$ time to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose a divide-and-conquer technique that solves the problem in $O(n_s + n_t log n_s)$ time. As a consequence, we construct a data structure of $O(n+(h^2log^3 h/loglog h))$ size in $O(n+(h^2log^4 h/loglog h))$ time such that each query can be answered in $O(log n)$ time.

Weak unit disk contact graphs are graphs that admit representing nodes as a collection of internally disjoint unit disks whose boundaries touch if there is an edge between the corresponding nodes. In this work we focus on graphs without embedding, i.e., the neighbor order can be chosen arbitrarily. We give a linear time algorithm to recognize whether a caterpillar, a graph where every node is adjacent to or on a central path, allows a weak unit disk contact representation. On the other hand, we show that it is NP-hard to decide whether a tree allows such a representation.
